If you have what it takes to build Singapore's digital future with us, we are looking for a Deputy Director, AI Governance and Safety to join the Data Innovation and Protection Group!

[What you will be working on]

Leadership & Strategy

  • Support the Cluster Director in providing strategic guidance to formulate AI governance policies, regulations and frameworks that address consumers’ concerns and grow a trusted AI ecosystem.
  • Advance Singapore's interests in AI governance at whole-of-government level and internationally with leading regulators and policy makers from around the world, AI safety institutes, international bodies and industry leaders.
  • Work with government agencies for a coordinated and coherent approach to AI governance in Singapore.
  • Support alignment of AI governance efforts across IMDA through the management of the IMDA AI governance task force, and contribute to team development, succession planning and capability building initiatives.
  • Manage cross-functional teams and coordinate with various government agencies and stakeholders.

Policy Development & Planning

  • Lead the development of domestic AI governance policies and frameworks that foster a trusted AI environment whilst addressing emerging risks, particularly in the rapidly evolving generative AI landscape that has emerged over the past 3 years.
  • Identify and prioritise areas requiring enhanced governance within the nascent AI policy environment, determining which aspects of AI development and deployment need stronger regulatory oversight.
  • Monitor AI developments including new AI capabilities, risks, domestic AI adoption, and international approaches (e.g. US, EU, UK, China) to inform policy development.
  • Collaborate with technical teams to develop progressive, globally relevant AI governance tools aligned with policy objectives.
  • Support the growth and development of the Singapore AI Safety Institute as a centre of excellence for AI safety research.
  • Implement data-driven approaches to AI governance through surveys, studies and stakeholder engagement.

International Relations and Engagement

  • Develop strategy to anchor Singapore’s global leadership in AI governance and safety.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key jurisdictions (e.g. US, EU, UK, China) and international AI governance bodies (e.g. ASEAN, OECD) to position Singapore as a thought leader and further Singapore's interests.
  • Support international engagements and advocate Singapore's pragmatic approach at key international fora.
  • Coordinate with the global AI Safety Institute network to advance AI safety testing initiatives.

[What we are looking for]

Education

• Bachelor or master’s degree in economics, Business, Political Science, Engineering, Computer Science, Law, Public Policy, or Arts and Social Sciences.

Experience

  • 15+ years' experience with at least 8 years of supervisory/middle management experience.
  • Strong understanding of domestic priorities with excellent political sensitivity to assess decisions within broader government context.
  • Strong stakeholder management capabilities, with experience engaging political office holders and senior leadership.
  • Track record in public engagement, cross-agency collaboration, and/or multi-stakeholder negotiation.

Technical Skills

  • Policy, sensemaking, and strategic planning skills related to technology governance.
  • Understanding of AI technology, governance landscape, key risks, and how they manifest in AI systems to design practical policies.

Leadership & Soft Skills

  • Strategic thinker with strong analytical and decision-making capabilities for complex AI governance challenges.
  • Flexible and adaptable to changes in a fast-evolving environment
  • Strong managerial skills to steer the team towards excellence, while ensuring well-being
  • Exceptional communication skills to engage senior management, government agencies, political office holders, AI companies and international regulators.
  • Collaborative mindset with experience in multi-stakeholder environments
