Job Summary
The Data Intelligence and Reporting Specialist provides strategic leadership in institutional analysis and reporting for the UBC Faculty of Medicine (FoM). This role sets priorities for data strategies, develops advanced methodologies and ensures reporting aligns with faculty goals and provincial health human resource mandates. Building on expertise in dashboard development, and statistical analysis, the Specialist leads complex projects that inform policy, resource allocations, and long-term planning as it relates to medical and health professions training outcomes. The position influences decision-making at the highest levels and represents the unit in consultations with external stakeholders, including government bodies such as the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Post-secondary Education and Future Skills.
Organizational Status
The Evaluation Studies Unit (ESU) was established in 2004 to provide program evaluation and strategic reporting services to support planning and decision-making within the UBC Faculty of Medicine (FoM). ESU provides comprehensive, rigorous, and objective data to assist stakeholders in the on-going development and improvement of education programs. The Unit is organizationally placed within the Education portfolio of the FoM, and is mandated to evaluate the effectiveness, quality, comparability, and impact of educational programs, provide supporting data for accreditation, and meet organizational and government reporting needs.
The Data Intelligence and Reporting Specialist reports to the Director, Evaluation Studies and collaborates with senior leadership, including Deans, Vice-Deans, Associate Deans and Directors. The position provides leadership to internal project teams and working groups and represents ESU at committees, working groups and planning meetings.
Work Performed
Provides strategic leadership in planning, design, and overall management of complex data initiatives, including predictive modelling and longitudinal studies on the outcomes of distributed medical and health professions education programs.
Initiates and maintains faculty-wide governance and standards for FoM Education interactive dashboards, and geospatial mapping (e.g. ArcGIS), guiding their development and ensuring consistency, integrity and strategic alignment.
Leads the determination of data analytic approaches and establishes analytic frameworks on priorities and agendas aligned with the strategic priorities of health human resource planning in British Columbia.
Leads the interpretation and synthesis of data from large, complex datasets to report on key findings on learner outcomes from across the Province; translating data insights into evidence-based recommendations that inform senior leadership decision-making.
Oversee and develops time-sensitive, high-level briefings and data summaries for senior FoM leadership, FoM Communications, and government and health authority partners (e.g Ministry of Health); exercises independent judgment and accountability over data interpretation and risk implications.
Provides consultative and high-level advice to senior leadership and administrative units on the strategic use of data and analytics to support evidence-based decision making, policy development, and continuous quality improvement.
Represents ESU in senior planning forums and external consultations (e.g., Ministry of Health) as the lead subject‑matter expert, shaping strategic discussions on data interpretation, performance measurement, and outcomes.
Monitors emerging trends in data analytics, reporting, governance and AI-enabled decision support, setting direction for their ethical and strategic integration into ESU and Faculty processes and practices.
Provides leadership and oversight for the responsible automation and ethical integration of AI to enhance analytical efficiency, decision quality and institutional insight with accountability for governance, transparency and risk mitigation.
Performs other duties as required to ensure the successful completion of assigned work.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Data and analysis for this position directly influences institutional policy, strategic direction and compliance with provincial mandates. Errors could result in significant long-term consequences for funding, accreditation and resource allocation.
Supervision Received
The Data Intelligence and Reporting Specialist works independently under broad direction from the Director. They will exercise full autonomy in setting out data analysis methodologies and data standards.
Supervision Given
The Data Intelligence and Reporting Specialist provides leadership and supervision to professional staff and project teams. They will oversee work allocation (in consultation with the Evaluation Manager), quality assurance and staff development and training.
Minimum Qualifications
Post-graduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of six years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
Graduate degree (Master’s or PhD) in relevant discipline (e.g. social sciences, quantitative research, data science) is preferred
Advanced proficiency with data analytics and visualization tools (e.g. Tableau, PowerBI, ArcGIS)
Advanced knowledge of MS Excel and MS Office Suite is required
Expertise in advanced statistical modelling, forecasting and policy analysis
Experience in survey research including project management, client management, and timeline management, as well as questionnaire design, sample design, and report writing for a non-technical audience.
Demonstrated leadership experience in planning and managing large-scale analytics projects on time and on budget
Excellent communication skills for presenting complex data to diverse audiences
High proficiency in composing correspondence, reports, presentations, and other written materials using clear and concise business English
Ability to exercise tact, discretion and sound judgment and decision-making
Ability to develop and maintain productive relationships with senior stakeholders, leadership and colleagues
Ability to design and oversee survey research and evaluation frameworks
High level of accuracy, attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities under pressure
