Job Summary
The Commercial Architecture Director is a licensed architect responsible for shaping strategic vision, standards, and innovation for commercial project design across the organization. This role ensures that all commercial initiatives align with design excellence, cost efficiency, technical specifications, and constructability best practices.
Overseeing a high performing architectural team, the Director collaborates closely with project leaders and external partners to deliver consistent, scalable support for commercial projects across multiple markets. This position drives architectural quality, fosters continuous improvement, and champions forward thinking solutions that strengthen the organization’s commercial portfolio.
This position requires onsite attendance 5 days per week at our Division Office located in Fairfax, Virginia.
Primary Job Responsibilities
Partner with divisions to provide strategic leadership for all commercial projects, ensuring alignment with design intent, cost targets, and constructability goals.
Lead, develop, and scale a team of architects, support staff, and outsource partners to support the commercial product needs of multiple divisions.
Partner with land teams and developers to coordinate product designs with site planning and resolve conflicts in order to meet the requirements of the project.
Work with division operations to develop presentation materials needed for Planning Board presentations and represent architecture in planning meetings as needed.
Lead and coordinate design initiatives, in conjunction with design team, for new plans, elevations and improvements to existing product.
Represent commercial architecture when coordinating with division and 3rd party consultants on projects having specialty requirements (density studies, noise analysis, impervious surface limits, energy qualifications, etc)
Evaluate plan/unit performance across divisions and identify opportunities for optimization, value engineering, and customer experience improvement.
Direct resolution of architectural, structural, or cross-functional plan issues involving multiple markets.
Set the vision for standardization, innovation, and platform consistency across multiple markets.

Required Education/Experience
Bachelor's Degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction or equivalent
Related Functional Experience: Minimum 10 or more years Architecture or Construction
Required Licensing, Registration and/or Certifications
Licensed architect
Valid Driver’s License because driving is an essential function of this position

Extensive knowledge and work experience in commercial construction may reduce or replace this requirement

Understanding of material and labor cost as it applies to design and house cost
Construction Document development expertise
Comprehensive knowledge of commercial construction techniques, building materials, building codes as well as technical and procedural knowledge of activities related to building construction.
Comprehensive knowledge of structural elements, product installation means and methods, value engineering, and costing principles and practices
Effective communication and organization skills
General understanding of ACAD is required, drafting experience is preferred
Pay Information
$160,000 - $175,000 annually
Hired applicant will be eligible to receive an annual bonus based on successful completion of defined performance objectives.

In addition, the Company offers an Employee Assistance Program and tuition reimbursement (as applicable). In addition to up to 9 paid company holidays per year, employees with less than 10 years of service are eligible for up to 23 paid days off and employees with 10 or more years of service are eligible for up to 28 paid days off. Note that all Sales Consultants, except those in CA, are not eligible for paid time off, but receive the equivalent days in unpaid time off and 8 paid sales holidays. Employees should consult with their local Human Resources Representative to discuss the composition of their available time off, which may differ based on work location and paid sick time eligibility.
