The Core Banking platform is the deterministic engine behind Australia’s largest and most demanding financial services institution. It must be precise, fast, and dependable under enormous load. It underpins transaction processing, ledger integrity, and position keeping at national scale. 

This platform has already undergone significant modernisation. The next chapter is about institutionalising those wins, embedding repeatable platform patterns, hardening correctness at scale, and transforming the ledger from a system of record into a high-leverage enterprise platform. 

Here, you’ll help convert deep systems engineering excellence into platform capabilities that the entire Bank can build from, surfacing telemetry, operational signals, and behavioural insights that power smarter products and more proactive operations.

You are a senior engineering authority with deep expertise in mission-critical financial systems. As Chief Engineer, Core Banking, you will define the technical direction and engineering craft for the ledger and platform ecosystem. 

You operate comfortably across infrastructure, platform and application layers. You can read and intervene in low-level systems when required. You lead from the front, solving the hardest problems in transaction processing, determinism, ledger consistency, and nation-scale performance. 

You balance deep problem solving with enterprise leverage. You fix the most complex technical issues, then convert those solutions into reusable patterns, reference architectures, runbooks, observability standards and platform components that raise capability across the Bank. 

You understand that correctness is non-negotiable  but you also recognise that platform telemetry and operational signals create downstream value for analytics, ML, product and operations teams. You ensure the platform is not only precise and performant, but also observable, measurable and consumable at scale. 

We’re interested in hearing from people who: 

• Have solved precision, latency and performance challenges at high scale 

• Shape SRE and observability standards and embed operational discipline across complex systems 

• Translate technical risk into clear business trade-offs for senior stakeholders 

• Convert complex engineering fixes into enterprise platform standards and reusable patterns 

• Operate with an engineer-first mentality and coach small, elite teams on deep systems problems 

• Align engineering craft with measurable business outcomes 

• Have led or materially contributed to legacy modernisation programs (cloud migration, mainframe rationalisation or equivalent) 

Nice to have: 

• Have 15+ years’ experience leading engineering in large, mission-critical banking or financial services environments 

• Bring deep expertise in ledger/accounting systems, deterministic transaction processing and position keeping 

Tech Skills: 

We use a broad range of technologies and engineering disciplines. Deep capability in several of the below will set you up for success: 

• Core banking engineering (ledger systems, accounting integrity, transaction processing) 

• Deterministic systems design and performance engineering 

• Low-latency, high-throughput distributed systems 

• Infrastructure, platform and application-layer engineering 

• SRE, observability, SLIs/SLOs, MTTD/MTTR optimisation 

• Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) architecture patterns 

• Legacy modernisation (cloud, mainframe, SAP/HANA or equivalent environments desirable but not mandatory) 

• Telemetry design and operational signal governance for analytics and ML consumption 

Success looks like: 

• Measurable uplift in SLIs/SLOs and reduced MTTD/MTTR for critical incidents 

• Enterprise adoption of reusable platform patterns that reduce bespoke ledger changes 

• Clear progress on legacy modernisation while preserving correctness and throughput 

• Institutionalised runbooks, observable systems and shared platform components
