Job Description:
Performs the most complex and advanced design functions for all phases of a project. Draws upon extensive technical experience, particularly with engineering/construction projects. Utilizes software applications extensively. Note: This position is the highest individual contributor level in the Designer job hierarchy and has limited incumbents. The use of this title requires GBU Talent Director or GBU Compensation Manager approval.
Specific Responsibilities
- Develops conceptual layout and design from P&IDs, equipment arrangement and modeling from vendor drawings, isometric detail extraction in software applications, troubleshooting and fixing failed isometric drawings, interference checking and clash approval, tracking pipe modeling progress, tracking equipment status and modeling progress, liaison and coordination with client and other disciplines.
- Prepares layout and subsequent modeling of all equipment, steel, piping, pipe supports, instrumentation, cable trays and conduit.
- Achieves cost effective and timely execution of the design from conceptual layouts to the development of the electronic model and subsequent isometrics and general arrangement drawings extracted from model.
- Prepares equipment design files.
- Participates in activities to define discipline design organization, including execution of discipline work involving design approach, schedules, standards, budgets, and procedures to meet client scope of work requirements.
- Assists in making staff assignments and monitors productivity and technical proficiency of the assigned personnel.
- Reviews work produced to ensure that applicable codes, standards, and procedures are followed, and that quality is acceptable.
- May provide input for managers regarding employee training, development and evaluation.
- Advises management regarding areas of improvement in staffing, progress slippage, scope changes or other events which could negatively affect project completion.
- May serve as job lead designer, with responsibility for preliminary through final project completion, including liaison with clients, suppliers, and contractors.
- Oversees the progress of drawings produced, ensuring quality.
- Recommends design methods and equipment use for discipline standards.
- Oversees application of state-of-the-art technology in the design area and recommends improvements to production methods.
- Ensures that checking is performed in accordance with discipline checking policy and procedures.
- Collaborates with Engineers and other engineering disciplines to ensure quality of design.
- Advises management with respect to change order requests for additions, deletions, or changes to the original scope of work.
- May oversee work deliverables from discipline design/drafting personnel on specified projects.
- Performs other responsibilities associated with this position as may be appropriate.
Skills and Competencies
- Advanced computer skills
- Proficiency utilizing CAD
- Advanced knowledge and experience with computer software used in design assignments
- Proven ability to perform in a lead capacity on a project
- Advanced written and verbal communication skills
Education and Typical Experience
- Associate's Degree 2-year technical degree (or equivalent) is preferred
- 15+ years related experience (including job lead experience)
Licenses and Certifications
- certificate of completion in CAD design from an accredited technical institution, preferred
