POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Performance Science Associate supports the delivery of performance science initiatives at the MLB level. This includes implementing and managing systems that streamline decision-making for performance and coaching staff. The role works closely with the Senior Performance Scientist to build an industry-leading applied performance science program within the New York Mets organization.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Work in coordination with the Senior Performance Scientist to design and implement system that maximize player readiness and performance throughout the season.
Coordinate with performance staff to execute routine athlete monitoring and testing protocols.
Support and collaborate with performance staff using data-driven insights to better inform practices.
Regularly oversee data collection and testing procedures with available technologies.
Assist in maintaining relevant databases and reporting structures for performance and coaching staff.
Assist in athlete rehabilitation and reconditioning by providing objective information to guide decision making.
Collaborate with the Analytics department to quantify performance and support player development initiatives.
Conduct applied research in performance profiling, epidemiology, and wellness monitoring.
Collaborate with the Field Staff to develop solutions for on-field performance deficits.
Regularly present information to staff on both internal and external research that is prevalent to athlete performance and health.
Be a positive, dependable, effective, and collaborative member of the department.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of best practices in applied performance science.
Maintain all professional credentials and certifications.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Undergraduate degree in Exercise Science, Physiology, Biomechanics, Kinesiology, or related degree.
CPR/First Aid certification. An advanced degree (Master’s or higher) is considered an asset.
1+ years’ experience in a similar role within collegiate or professional sports (internships included).
Experience working with high-performance athletes and performance staff in competitive environments (Professional sports, Division I athletics).
Experience operating athlete monitoring and testing technologies (force plates, athlete position systems, dynamometers/load cells, linear position transducers, etc.)
Experience with athlete management systems or comparable performance databases.
Demonstrated ability to clean, analyze, visualize, and report data.
Experience with data analysis and visualization tools (e.g., R, Python, Tableau, Power BI) is considered an asset.
Evidence of continued professional development and education (workshops, accreditations, etc.)
Excellent communication skills with coaches, athletes, and staff.
Excellent ability to provide oral and written updates on the readiness of the team/players.
Knowledge of current trends and research in applied sport science and relevant research.
A positive, friendly personality with a passion for assisting others in achieving their goals.
Must be able to travel domestically and internationally. Must be able to work unconventional hours.
CPSS and/or CSCS or relevant certifications are considered an asset.
