The International Mission Board, a nonprofit religious organization in Richmond, VA, is hiring for an Associate General Counsel!


The Associate General Counsel will serve as a supporting attorney to the General Counsel to fulfill the General Counsel’s mission of providing excellent legal advice with integrity that enables IMB to fulfill its vision of a multitude from every language people, tribe and nation knowing and worshipping the Lord Jesus Christ. The Associate General Counsel will provide legal analysis and strategic advice to enable IMB to navigate the complex patchwork of both state and federal laws in the US and the laws of over 100 sovereign countries that apply to IMB personnel and its global operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Draft, review, and negotiate real‑estate agreements worldwide—spanning purchase‑sale contracts, construction deals, leases, easements, and development agreements —to drive strategic stewardship of IMB’s global property assets.
  • Conduct legal due diligence on international property acquisitions, dispositions, and leases, and design optimal entity structures that maximize tax efficiency and shield IMB from liability.
  • Serve as the trusted legal advisor to IMB’s Human Resources team on every facet of employment law—from recruitment through retirement—while navigating the distinctive challenges of a faith‑based employer, such as religious hiring, ministerial‑exception claims, missionary deployments, and cross‑border compliance.
  • Provide support for internal personnel investigations, ensuring swift, fair, and legally sound outcomes.
  • Research, analyze, and deliver expert counsel on U.S. and global regulatory issues affecting IMB’s logistics, finance, Human Resources, and worldwide staff, covering taxation, banking, and corporate transparency requirements.
  • Partner with local counsel across multiple jurisdictions to identify and mitigate legal risks, guaranteeing strict compliance with regional employment and real‑estate statutes.
  • Direct the resolution of real‑estate and employment‑law disputes, orchestrating litigation or arbitration strategies and managing external counsel to protect IMB’s interests.

               

Requirements:

  • At least five to eight years of law practice 
  • In house experience is advantageous but not required
  • Juris Doctor from ABA accredited law school
  • Licensed by the Virginia State Bar (or willingness to obtain VA licensure)
  • Previous involvement with diverse legal issues related to real estate and human resource initiatives
  • Ability to manage a legal project from beginning to end and meet client needs. 
  • Experience with utilization, design, development and implementation of a variety of processes, procedures, templates and tools to accomplish job responsibilities.
  • Experience with drafting emails and legal memoranda on complex issues impacting businesses and nonprofit organizations internationally; researching, reviewing and drafting a variety of legal documents from jurisdictions around the world; craft and deliver recommendations and presentations on simple to complex legal topics to a wide variety of audiences.
  • Proven ability to build client relationships; identify, gather and evaluate relevant information to make informed recommendations; navigate through ambiguity, obstacles and multi-faceted individual and organizational needs.
  • Intermediate computer skills, including Office 365 application and legal software.
  • Ability to travel internationally (2x a year).
