Leads Protective Services’ Crime Analysis and Special Services Unit, providing strategic oversight for campus investigations, threat assessments, and crime analysis efforts in support of a safe and secure WashU Medicine environment. Manages electronic video surveillance and criminal intelligence systems, oversees sensitive investigations, and ensures full compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act and other federally mandated requirements. Partners with internal stakeholders, external agencies, and contractors to support physical security initiatives, capital projects, and crime reduction efforts, while mentoring staff and fostering professional standards across the unit. Serves as a trusted representative of Protective Services through effective communication, collaboration, and leadership within the university community and beyond.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Conducts and/or supervise sensitive and intricate investigations of criminal activity, significant employee misconduct, and potential threats against the campus. Subjects of investigation may include employees, students, patients, visitors, and unaffiliated outsiders. Customer organizations may include local and federal law enforcement and other WashU departments and programs.  

  • Manages and operates Protective Services' closed-circuit television (CCTV) video surveillance system to maintain safety and security on campus and collects evidence of criminal activity and administrative wrongdoing. Recognizes and addresses locations requiring CCTV coverage. Identifies system limitations and faults and collaborates with Protective Services' CCTV vendor for repairs and equipment upgrades. Keeps abreast of new video surveillance technologies for potential application on the School of Medicine Campus. 

  • Administers Protective Services' report writing, record management, and criminal intelligence systems, ensuring timely, accurate, complete and professional formal written communications throughout the organization. Authors and disseminates actionable criminal intelligence products both internally and externally.

  • "Owns" Clery Act data collection, reporting and overall compliance on the WashU Medicine Campus, to include researching and interpreting policy updates and requirements, training and directing subordinates on their relevant assigned responsibilities, collecting and applying crime statistics, writing original text for the annual campus security report, collaborating with other WashU personnel, including the office of the Executive Vice Chancellor, to ensure comprehensive program compliance. 

  • Partners with other OFMD subunits, customer departments and programs, and vendors/contractors during capital and renovation projects through the planning, design, and installation phases to select functional and effective security equipment and other physical security measures. Requires reviews of plans/blueprints, identification of equipment locations, selection of equipment, and serves as security system "project manager."  

  • Represents Protective Services in meetings, at functions, and via written communications to the entire campus community, to university partners including WashU PD and OGC, and to key outside stakeholders with the objectives of positively affecting area crime trends and the department's and university's overall reputations for quality, integrity, and professionalism.

Required Qualifications:

  • If no previous departmental psychological assessment has been completed by the individual, a psychological assessment will be necessary for this position.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a St. Louis Metropolitan Security License within 30 days of hire.
  • In order to obtain this St. Louis Metropolitan Security License, one must meet the basic licensing requirements for the Security Officer licensing category which specifies that individuals must be at least 21 years of age (https://slmpd.org/privatesecurity/).
  • If an Illinois resident, must have a valid FOID card and Concealed Carry License (CCL).
  • Must obtain and maintain a Missouri Class E or Illinois Class D Driver’s license within 30 days of hire.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Advanced degree in criminal justice, a related social services field, or other applicable course of study; graduation from an accredited law enforcement academy.
  • Experience in Avigilon and ARMS systems.

Salary Range

$75,200.00 - $128,800.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
