Position Summary


As the Finance Director for a portfolio of assets, you will be the CFO of multiple high-value investments worth hundreds of millions of pounds. Your role will involve collaborating closely with the Medicine Development Leader and Team to navigate the entire journey of new medicines, from early development to market launch. You will work alongside colleagues in Commercial, Manufacturing, and Portfolio Management, articulating the value of these investments and crafting a clear roadmap for bringing potential medicines to life as tangible, life-saving treatments.

In this pivotal role, you will lead the charge in securing crucial investments at Governance boards, ensuring that financial commitments and performance are monitored and communicated in real-time. You will deliver profound insights and analyses that will shape the development path of these medicines. Your expertise will be instrumental in accelerating the process, mitigating risks, and reducing costs, ultimately expediting the delivery of these life-changing medicines to patients in need.

Responsibilities

  • Work independently, leading Finance Partnering support to the Development programs under his/her responsibility, providing active financial leadership and challenge.  Provide support as the first line point of contact for the area under his/her responsibility on all financial matters.

  • Lead the finance aspects of business cases relating to the programs within his/her area and provide financial input into business development transactions in his/her area. Drive action and decisions based on clear and crisp communication.   

  • Partner with MDTs (Medicine Development Teams) and Portfolio to drive high quality decision making through Governance (e.g., DRB and PIB), validating assumptions and forecasts. Partner with Global Therapy Area Finance on commercial forecasts and scenarios, understanding sensitivities within options provided.

  • Lead budgeting and forecasting processes for his/her development programs focusing on robust but pragmatic forecasting which takes into account the unpredictability of R&D outcomes through scenario analysis and management of attrition.  Ensure that business partners are clear on their financial commitments and have a ‘real time’ view of current status.

  • Accountable for the integrity and accuracy of financial reporting related to his/her development programs.

  • Accountable for the project valuation used to govern the investment, consolidating inputs from stakeholders (Decision Sciences, Portfolio Management, Commercial etc.), ensuring appropriate documentation of assumptions, for governance and intangible testing purposes, and upload of the valuation into the system (ENRICH).

  • Understand the sensitivities of the project valuations to upcoming inflection points, decisions or timing changes. Understand the Balance Sheet impact of asset valuations and any risk of impairments.       

  • Support the VP R&D Finance RIIRU to appropriately prioritise budget and Development resources across the portfolio to maximise return on investment and to ensure delivery of R&D objectives.

  • Endorse the use of effort tracking and IRM within the Development programs to drive a comprehensive view of resource allocation.  Be an active support for resource allocation, challenging assumptions, and forecasts.

  • Support delivery of Development results through the provision of analysis, insight and challenge related to performance.

  • Direct effective communication to VP R&D Finance RIIRU and SVP R&D Finance providing insight on program progression, governance proposals and risks/opportunities within Development programs.

  • Drive connections with other functions (incl. supply chain, Research Tech and Development) to optimise decision making, resource allocation and performance across R&D acting as a role model for enterprise thinking. 

  • Indirect management of finance analysts supporting Development programs, actively supporting growth and development. Act as mentor/coach across R&D Finance.

Qualifications/Skills

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting (or qualified by experience)

  • Experience as a Finance Partner in a business unit environment

  • Track record of driving sound business decision making in relation to complex problems based on robust, impartial financial analysis

  • Track record of setting and delivering financial plans

  • Strong skills in modelling, analysis, forecasting, strategic / scenario planning, and decision making. Some project management skills.

  • Understanding of financial systems and processes including SAP/CERPS

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Finance Partnering experience in R&D

  • Ability to work in a complex and fast-moving environment with multiple priorities

  • Ability to connect with and influence business stakeholders at all levels in a technical environment and to establish a high level of credibility with senior internal and third-party stakeholders

Work Location:

This role is based in the United Kingdom (GSK HQ, London ) and offers a hybrid working model, combining on-site and remote work.
