2026 Summer Intern - Production Technology Automation

Department Summary

The South San Francisco Equipment and Automation department is responsible for ensuring the reliability and efficiency of our automated fleet network and supporting Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) across our manufacturing operations, which includes supporting automation for Single-Use Technology (SUT) systems crucial for drug substances manufacturing. We are a dynamic team at the intersection of biotechnology and cutting-edge technology, dedicated to driving innovation in pharmaceutical production and maintaining the highest standards of quality and compliance. This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site.

The Opportunity

  • Develop and update engineering documentation, including functional specifications, design specifications, P&ID and technical instructions.  

  • Assist in data analysis related to fleet performance and efficiency improvement.

  • Support the implementation of small automation projects and continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Support with knowledge management with AI tools.

  • Stretched goal: Participate in the deployment, commission, qualification and troubleshoot of industrial automation system issues (e.g. DCS, PLC, HMI, manufacturing equipment and field devices).

Program Highlights

  • Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

  • Program start dates are in May/June 2026.

  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

Who You Are

Required Education

You meet one of the following criteria:

  • Must be pursuing a Bachelor's Degree (enrolled student).

  • Must have attained a Bachelor's Degree (not currently enrolled in a graduate program and graduated within the last 12 months).

  • Must be pursuing a Master's Degree (enrolled student).

  • Must have attained a Master's Degree (graduated within the last 12 months).

Required Majors: Chemical, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Computer, Computer Science, Electrical & Electronic, or Systems Engineering (or a related engineering discipline).

Required Skills: 

  • Fundamental understanding of and hands-on experience with mechanical, electronic, or mechatronic systems (e.g., through coursework, senior projects, or hobbyist projects).

  • Basic understanding of electrical principles and ability to interpret technical documents (e.g., P&IDs, electrical schematics).

  • Demonstrable programming or scripting skills (e.g., Python, MATLAB, C++, or experience with microcontrollers like Arduino/Raspberry Pi) used for problem-solving or controlling hardware.

  • Proven ability to perform systematic troubleshooting.

  • Demonstrated strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

  • A strong interest in or exposure to industrial automation and control systems (e.g., understanding of PID controllers, familiarity with the concept of PLCs/DCS).

  • Experience working with electromechanical and fluidic components (e.g., pumps, sensors, valves, solenoids).

  • Prior experience or internship in a manufacturing, lab, or industrial environment.

Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting. 

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $40.00-$50.00 per hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
