PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Salary to be commensurate with experience
The hiring range for this position is $31.77 - $39.72/hourly
This is classified as VHBE (Variable Hour Benefit Eligible), where the selected candidate will work up to 40 hours per week. The selected candidate will be eligible to elect Medical, Dental, and Vision benefits, accrue paid time off, and receive 11 paid holidays.

OVERVIEW OF JOB
Under the direction of the Risk Operations Manager and Sr. Workers’ Compensation Adjuster, the Workers Compensation Assistant performs a variety of clerical and claims functions for the Workers’ Compensation Claims team in the Risk Management Division.
PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Verifies new claim file setup with all necessary documents uploaded in the Risk Management Information System (RMIS)
Maintains confidential physical and electronic claim files in accordance with HIPPA.
Assists with records management and archiving.
Establishes initial claim reserves based on schedule provided by Sr. Claims Adjuster
Assists with fielding basic questions from injured workers, supervisors and providers regarding workers’ compensation claims
Under the direction of the Sr. Claims Adjuster, prepares and submits subrogation demands
Under the direction of the Sr. Claims Adjuster, handles medical workers’ compensation claims
Performs additional duties as required

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS
An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
Education:
High School or GED
Experience:
One year of clerical, data entry, or related experience
Preferred Qualifications:
Associate’s Degree
Experience in medical, insurance, or legal office. Experience with Worker’s Compensation or Medical claims preferred.
Knowledge:
Knowledge of computer software applications including Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point.
Basic understanding of HIPPA.
Exceptional communication skills and de-escalation techniques for handling difficult people and sensitive/emotional situations.
Skills:
Strong interpersonal skills.
Self-starter capable of working alone or with others.
Uses discretion and independent judgment in claim handling.
Abilities:
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with claimants, employees, attorneys and third-party administrators.
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Ability to handle sensitive situations with tact and diplomacy.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Essential Personnel:
When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.
Physical Demands:
Sedentary physical work requiring ability to lift a maximum of 10 pounds.
Occasional lifting, carrying, walking, and standing
Hand/eye coordination for operation of computer keyboard
Vision for review and analysis of data and reports.
Frequent speech communication, hearing and listening to maintain communication with employees, claimants and citizens.
Work Environment:
Works in a clean, comfortable environment.
Equipment Used:
Laptop computer, telephone and copier/printer.
This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, etc.) in the course of their employment.
The city of Aurora will implement furlough days (unpaid days off) for most employees in 2026. The scheduled furlough dates are January 16, April 10, July 2, and December 24.
