Major Duties:

  • Responsible for planning, constructing, and repairing a wide variety of shipping and storage containers.
  • Checks complex items to be boxed or crated against shipping documents or invoices to ensure correct identification, quantity, and condition.
  • Notes weight, shape, and support requirements; considers destination, transportation mode, and handling to determine the appropriate box, skid, or crate.
  • Measures, cuts, and manufactures shipping containers requiring critical fitted blocking, bracing, cradles, yokes, collars, or other supports necessary for proper support and protection.
  • Packs materials and equipment in standard or non-standard boxes or crates using proper wrappings, liners, cradles, chocks, yokes, collars, cushioning, or other protective devices in accordance with proper packing procedures.
  • Prepares packing lists, completes shipping documents, and applies stencils or labels identifying shipping and handling instructions.
  • Cuts precision blocking and bracing materials and places them in rail cars and vans to protect materials being shipped.

Qualifications: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition. The SOE and minimum qualifications for this position is: Ability To Do The Work Of A Wood Worker Without More Than Normal Supervision (SOE): Applying plans, layouts, and measurements to manufacture a wide range of shipping containers. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Effort: Often required to stand, stoop, bend, push, pull, lift, reach, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Lifts and carry items weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted and lifts and moves heavier items with the assistance of other workers with a weight limit up to 90 pounds and/or using lifting devices such as floor hoists or cranes. Working Conditions: Works in warehouses or other enclosed areas that may be drafty, cold, or overheated. They are occasionally required to work outside for short periods of time where they are subject to prevailing weather conditions. They are subject to noise and dust from power saws, hammers, nailing machines, and related equipment Incumbents are exposed to the possibility of cuts, bruises and scrapes, splinters, muscle strains, and other injuries from using hand and power tools. Safety equipment and protective devices including safety glasses, ear plugs, gloves, and proper clothing are used to minimize hazards.
