Job Summary
Responsible for maintaining and overseeing the use of common-use equipment and associated spaces in their designated wing, including:
Autoclaves
Glass Washers
Ice Machines
Backup Fridges and freezers
Cold rooms
Other equipment, where applicable
Organizational Status
The Wing Managers report to the Manager, Operations and Administration
Work Performed
General regular maintenance of the above equipment and spaces, including glass washer filters (where applicable). 1
Trouble-shooting minor problems with equipment prior to contacting the LSC workshop or UBC Service Centre (please refer to the contact numbers below).
Providing orientation information to new lab members with regards to common-use equipment and spaces. Information provided will include the nature of the hazards that the worker might encounter while working in the area, and how to minimize risks.
Coordinating with the appropriate laboratory personnel in ensuring that common use work areas are free of hazards and are accessible and safe
Performing mandatory autoclave effectiveness testing and submitting associated records (on-line) on a monthly basis. For process details, see the corresponding LSC autoclave testing procedure. Records including log book and paper rolls for 3 years (Yearly autoclave validation conducted by the Research Sustainability Manager)
Other duties, where applicable. Promoting sustainability initiatives and onboarding in collaboration with the Research Sustainability Manager. Prevention of Sink corrosion by promoting neutralization of bleach containing liquids with “Bleach-Stop”.
- Responsible for the monthly flushing / testing of emergency (sink) eyewash stations including water temperature check and keeping associated records.
- Responsible for ensuring that the labs in their Wing are aware of the need to flush unused “white” taps and “CW” taps in fumehoods every second month and keeping associated records (tubing on faucets will prevent flooding during flushing).
- Responsible for being the point-of-contact for various building-related issues in the wing and working with labs to ensure a contact person is available for any service/utility worker needing access to a lab or equipment in the wing.
- Responsible for conducting safety inspections of their assigned wing every two (2) months and keeping / submitting inspection reports in a timely manner, as required.
- Attend Local Safety Team (LST) Meetings for the area. If safety concern identified, inform worker, then PI (if applicable / appropriate) and then inform LST and LSC /LSI operations / safety personnel.

Supervision Received
Works with minimal supervision. Reports to the Manager, Operations and Administration. May receive work direction from the Safety Officer for the building, or the LSC Operations Manager.
Supervision Given
- Responsible for overseeing / monitoring compliance of lab members regarding use of common equipment in the wing and to act as back-up Wing Manager, when needed.
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
