Performs precision welding functions supporting small/prototype fabrication efforts. Conducts expert metal welding and cutting within exact, specific tolerances.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Weld various types of metals, generally holding tolerances within 0.005 inches.
  • Welds metal components together to fabricate or repair products, such as machine parts, plant equipment, mobile homes, motors and generators, according to layouts, blueprints or work orders, using brazing and a variety of arc and gas welding equipment.
  • Welds metal parts together, using both gas welding or brazing and any combination of arc welding processes, performs related tasks such as thermal cutting and grinding, repairs broken or cracked parts, fills holes and increases size of metal parts, positions and clamps together components of fabricated metal products preparatory to welding.
  • May locate and repair cracks in industrial engine cylinder heads, using inspection equipment and gas torch, may perform repairs only and be required to pass employer performance tests or standard tests to meet certification standards of governmental agencies or professional and technical associations.
  • Properly operate machine shop equipment with optimum use of raw materials.
  • Analyze engineering designs to solve or provide insight into metal structural issues.
  • Hold or obtain appropriate industry certifications.
  • Research innovations from external sources and applies to internal projects or processes.
  • Create new methods and procedures to achieve work goals.

Minimum Position Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location.

  • Must be able to speak, read, write and understand English.
  • High school diploma or equivalent. Vocational/technical training beyond high school.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of job-experience or equivalent.
  • Operating knowledge of precision sheet metal welding, high vacuum tungsten inert gas welding, shielded metal arc welding, soldering and operating knowledge of CNC equipment is required.
  • Must have or be able to obtain licenses/certifications as needed to perform duties.
  • Must have a valid and current state driver’s license.
  • Must be able to operate a government general-purpose vehicle.
  • May be required to obtain and maintain a forklift license.
  • Must be able to complete paperwork associated with the position as required.
  • Must be able to work in a fast paced, complex environment.
  • Must be able to read and understand Technical Manuals, Technical Bulletins, Army Regulations and Department of the Army Pamphlets
  • Must possess basic computer skills.
  • Must have the ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Must have an ability to meet physical demands and pass any related medical examination requirements required to perform daily assigned tasks.
  • Position may require the ability to pass and maintain a Security Clearance.
  • May need the ability to obtain and maintain a government Common Access Card (CAC).
  • Position may require travel.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.

Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands:

  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs. with or without accommodation.

  • Must utilize all proper lifting procedures and practices.

  • Must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Must be able to work at heights.

  • Must be able to climb in and out of vehicles of various sizes and heights

  • Must be able to work under pressure and strenuous conditions.

  • Must be able to meet short suspense dates.

  • Must be able to conduct work in the out-of-doors area with potential exposure to extreme climatic conditions (i.e. extreme temperatures, high humidity, rain and blowing dust).

  • Must be able to withstand prolonged periods of stooping; climbing; standing; and sitting for long periods of uninterrupted time.

  • May require shift work.

  • May be required to work an uncommon tour of duty including nights, weekends, and holidays.

  • During the usual work period, the worker may be exposed to sounds and noise levels that are distracting and uncomfortable.
