Actual starting pay will vary based on factors including, but not limited to, geographic location, experience, skills, specialty, and education.

Eligible for an Annual Discretionary Cash Bonus Target: 17.5%

Eligible for an Annual Discretionary Restricted Stock Units Bonus Target: 17.5%

These discretionary target bonuses may be awarded semi-annually based upon your achievement of performance goals and targets.

About This Job

Axos Bank is looking for a Vice President, Lender Finance Underwriter to originate, structure, underwrite, and execute complex credit facilities. You’ll own full‑cycle underwriting from screening to close, partner closely with portfolio management post‑close, and help build procedures and tools that scale a growing business.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare credit write ups and present to senior management
  • Draft and negotiate term sheets with counterparties 
  • Assist in screening and structuring new loan opportunities
  • Determine a customer’s eligibility for financing and related credit risk
  • Spread financial statements, complete ratios, trends, and cash flow analysis, provide clear and concise written financial analysis supporting views of the borrowers’ financial condition
  • Analyze credit worthiness of prospective borrowers and guarantors
  • Perform industry and geographical research and other due diligence for properties and transactions properties located throughout the United States
  • Underwrite and execute complex transactions supported by the following asset classes: corporate cash flow loans, small and medium sized business loans, consumer loans and leases, equipment leases
  • Financial modeling of structured products, and corporate financial projections
  • Meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple prospects and deal closings
  • Manage the legal documentation process with internal and external legal counsel
  • Perform site visits of prospective clients
  • Work directly with portfolio management team to assist with post-closing amendments, modification and waiver requests
  • Implement deposit and treasury management services to prospective borrowers
  • Ad-hoc project management to implement strategic and operational initiatives within the group
  • Apply current credit policies to all credit decisions
  • Maintain strong relationships with institutional counterparties including private debt funds, investment banks, and brokers
  • Potentially manage a team of analysts

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (finance, economics or accounting preferred)
  • 7+ years of experience working in a financial institution in a credit role (preferably with a bank that provides formal bank credit training)
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and written and verbal communication skills 
  • Ability to self-manage multiple and/or shifting priorities to produce professional quality work under time constraints
  • Capable of working independently and in a group environment
  • Strong problem recognition and resolution skills
  • Ability to sensitize borrower projections by “stressing” key company and industry drivers and ensuring that Axos’ loan structure and collateral position can sustain a downturn in any of these key drivers
  • Strong analytical skills including the ability to read and assess individual and company financial statements, cash flow, industry and competitive analysis and projections
  • Superior analytical and financial modeling experience  
  • Strong decision making abilities with an emphasis on data and key industry metrics
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office – Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Visio

Preferred:

  • Experience underwriting and structuring asset based and commercial credit transactions
  • Formal bank credit training
  • CFA, or progress toward earning it
