Job Summary:
Emigrant Bancorp provides a wide array of banking and financial services for individuals and businesses including: retail banking, residential and commercial lending, and private wealth management. The Commercial Credit Review Department provides independent credit risk review of the various commercial lending businesses in the Bank. The Businesses include lower middle market leveraged lending, commercial real estate including bridge and construction lending, financing wealth management/asset management businesses, asset-based lending, sports franchise lending, fine art and private banking loans, and media. A qualified candidate will participate in reviews of commercial credit business units by evaluating a sample of individual credits to ensure they are appropriately underwritten and monitored, properly risk-rated, adhere to both the bank’s and the business unit’s credit policies, and meet regulatory requirements and definitions. Responsibilities include participating in all aspects of the formal credit review process such as sample selection, analysis of portfolio data, independent verification of business units’ regulatory loan classifications and facility risk ratings, loan impairment and reserves, and charge-offs, communication of findings to the business unit, completion of written report, and documentation/safekeeping of work papers.
Job Specific Responsibilities and Duties:
- Perform internal credit reviews for the Bank’s commercial businesses to ensure that the business units are properly assessing the asset quality of their portfolios on a timely basis.
- Evaluate the credit quality of each sampled loan transaction through a comprehensive evaluation which includes credit and financial analysis, verification of facility risk ratings, regulatory loan classifications, accrual status, impairment/reserve levels, and charge-offs.
- Generate written assessments of each individual loan transaction reviewed that summarizes the overall conclusions reached (e.g., rationale for current risk rating, assessment of regulatory definition, appropriateness of accounting treatment).
- Communicate issues, problems, and/or exceptions, trends, concern and conclusions derived from the portfolio and the individual credits being reviewed to the Director of Commercial Credit Review.
- Communicate with credit officers and business heads in a professional manner to relay findings and areas for improvement and work with the business unit on resolution of issues when they arise.
- Participate in opening and closing meetings with business heads and staff of the lending group under review.
- Monitor the commercial businesses on an ongoing basis via industry trends, economic news, business specific information, and review the business units’ quarterly review updates to assist in early problem recognition.
- Support the Director of Commercial Credit Review in responding to and communicating with internal and external auditors during exams performed on Emigrant’s Commercial Credit Review function.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree (MBA) or equivalent strongly preferred.
- Broad base of credit experience with a minimum of seven years of experience in underwriting and managing commercial corporate loans and/or conducting credit reviews of commercial corporate loans. Understanding complex real estate transactions is a plus.
- Formal credit training required from a large banking institution preferred.
- Strong organizational, analytical, interpersonal and written/oral communication skills. Ability to write cogently and convincingly. Ability to write reports that conform to prescribed style and format.
- Ability to maintain credibility with the business units reviewed.
- Strong time management skills.
- Strong team player who enjoys working in a collegial environment.
- High proficiency with computer software such as Excel and Word.
