Guardian Veterinary Centre is seeking an ER RVT for a maternity leave coverage position (12-18 months, with possibility of extension). This position is based on a rotational schedule that will include daytime, overnight, evening and weekend shifts. Shift premiums are available for overnight and weekends! The selected candidate will work in a variety of roles in the ER, including triage, outpatient and inpatient care.
New to emergency? No problem! We love to teach and support RVTs who leap into the ER world.
Requirements
Registered Veterinary Technologist in the province of Alberta
Willingness to learn new skills and procedures, as well as adapt to new cases and circumstances
Excellent communication skills
Ability to handle stress and pressure while being able to think on the spot and make decisions quickly
Physical ability to be on your feet for long periods of time and lift patients/objects up to 50lb
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
The ability to work a variety of shifts, including days, overnights, weekends, and holidays, and then being on time and prepared to work at the beginning of those scheduled shifts.
Nature of Work
Reporting to the ER RVT team lead, this position functions on a rotational basis, providing consistent patient care during the days, evenings, weekends and Statutory Holidays.
VCA Guardian Veterinary Centre utilizes our RVTs' knowledge and skills within the entirety of their scope of practice. The DVM team values our RVTs feedback, experience and expertise in managing our patients. We encourage continued learning always!
This position requires quick thinking, the ability to prioritize and time management expertise to provide gold standard care to our patients.
RVTs working in emergency medicine require excellent communication skills – whether this be with coworkers or clients – the emergency room can be stressful, and clear communication is of the utmost importance during these times.
Essential Job Functions
To manage and monitor critically ill and post-operative patients
Triage and perform emergency procedures under the direction of the veterinarian, handling a variety of patients including cats, dogs, small mammals, wildlife and avian species.
Safely anesthetize patients for a variety of procedures
Perform diagnostic imaging
Place IV catheters and collect blood, urine and fecal samples
Run various laboratory tests on a variety of samples
Confidence with medical math and calculations
Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records, patient invoices and treatment sheets
