The Veterinary Teaching Hospital operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This person will provide technical veterinary support to faculty, house officers, and students working on services throughout the small animal hospital that interact with the SA-ICU and SA-ER while also providing leadership support for full-time, part-time, and student technicians/assistants working within the area. It is essential that this person have expertise in small animal emergency and critical care and is able to provide instruction to technicians and veterinary students on related skills. It is also essential that this person have demonstrated aptitude for leadership along with the ability to guide and motivate a large group of people of varying skill.
To include support for critical and emergency cases seen during and after hours. To include proper adherence to infection and biosecurity control protocols. Areas of patient care and responsibilities include but are not limited to Small Animal ICU, Small Animal Isolation, and Small Animal ER.
Job Responsibilities:
45% Perform, teach, and instruct others in a variety of highly technical clinical procedures associated with care and treatment of critically ill animals utilizing life support techniques, emergency triage, and intensive care procedures and equipment. Administer medications, place of intravenous catheters, perform venipuncture, cyctocentesis, abdominal/thoracic taps, etc. Monitor patients recovery of anesthetized patients; maintaining accurate and complete records of vital signs, treatments, procedures, and medical notes associated. Instruct and observe level 1 and 2 veterinary technicians, student workers, clinical students, veterinary interns, and technician interns by tutorial and by example the techniques and protocols associated with daily patient care.
25% Perform a variety of duties as assigned by the supervisor or director of nursing such as:
-Support the management of the SAICU and ER technician schedules, ensuring appropriate shift coverage.
-Manage day to day personnel concerns in the absence of supervisor; verify tasks are completed and that patient care meets a high standard with minimal adverse events.
-Communicate directly with supervisor or Nursing Director when problems arise.
-Manage equipment, submit for repair as needed, monitor inventory.
-Provide input for performance evaluations. Other leadership tasks as assigned.
20% Maintain the ICU in a state of readiness. Always prepared when the need for CPCR techniques, and emergency therapy arises. To include completion of daily, weekly, and monthly chores. Equipment quality controls,
Inventory, and stocking.
Provide general instruction to 3rd and 4th year veterinary students, veterinary interns, technician interns by tutorial and example, the techniques and protocols appropriate for treating the emergent small animal to include assessment, monitoring, and recording information.
Perform and instruct proper documentation in the medical record of all information, procedures, therapies. Complete and instruct others on preparing requests, prescriptions, client communication, etc. Participate/lead nursing rounds at shift change.
10% Be a part of maintaining the blood bank. Provide holiday coverage for the Small Animal ICU as well as the Emergency service. Act as essential personnel in the event of activation during of the hospital as an emergency response facility.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree and 4 years of experience OR associate’s degree in veterinary technology with 4 years experience; OR Certification as a vet tech or equivalent with 4 years experience; OR 7 Years of experience in a working environment with similar duties.
Preferred Certifications/Licenses: CVT, RVT, LVT Certified, Registered or Licensed Veterinary Technician.

Essential Personnel- Required to work a variety of shifts including nights, weekends, holidays, and "on-call"/relief shifts per PS-18.

Physical Requirements-Required to be capable of lifting more than 50 pounds, standing or walking for prolonged periods, able to reach above and below the shoulder, vision (near sight), vision (far sight), kneel or sit on the floor, push/pulling, grasping, climbing, crawling bending, squatting, and/or twisting.
