General Motors

Vehicle Assistant Program Manager

Warren, Michigan, United States of America Full time

Job Description

The Role

At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We’re turning today’s impossible into tomorrow’s standard —from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.

Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.

Program Management teams ensure execution of programs by managing a portfolio of projects for on-time, on-target launch and lifecycle improvement. Program Team leaders see the whole picture of the program from initial program approval, design and engineering development through go-to-market launch, lifecycle, and end of production. We coordinate the program teams from across global General Motors' functional areas to ensure success.

As a Vehicle Assistant Program Manager (APM), you will play a critical role in ensuring successful execution of vehicle programs from concept to end-of-production. A great Assistant Program Manager (APM) balances navigating ambiguity along with a checklist mentality regarding process and execution.  A high level of independent judgment and considerable creativity is necessary to solve unique execution and business opportunities. You’ll manage a portfolio of projects that drive on-time, on-target launches and lifecycle improvements. Acting as a key connector across global General Motors functional areas, you’ll help transform complex challenges into clear, actionable solutions that deliver customer-focused and business-relevant products.

What You’ll Do

  • Coordinate Program Execution Team (PET) agendas, facilitate meetings, and document decisions.

  • Lead the Change Request/Decision Notice (CR/DN) process, including screening team meetings.

  • Prepare presentations for senior leadership gate reviews (VPE, GPLE, and others).

  • Assist in developing business cases for program content changes.

  • Manage Product Program Content (PPC), Program Content Authoring Tool (PCAT), and Program Notebook.

  • Align content with Vehicle Description System (VDS) and PCAT.

  • Monitor program readiness in collaboration with the Vehicle Planning Coordinator.

  • Advise cross-functional teams supporting Product Execution.

  • Ensure internal and external customer voices are represented in program decisions.

  • Handle special assignments and provide backup support for Program Manager responsibilities.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Experience: 5+ years in Vehicle Development, Planning, Engineering Operations, Program Management, or Design.

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Business, or related field.

  • Leadership: Proven ability to take initiative, anticipate challenges, and keep large teams focused on results.

  • Communication: Strong oral and written skills for both small and large group settings.

  • Problem-Solving: High analytical ability to tackle complex, ambiguous problems and deliver clear solutions.

  • Adaptability: Thrive in fast-paced, dynamic environments with multiple constraints.

  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

  • Execution: Demonstrated ability to take vague assignments through to completion.

  • Collaboration: High interpersonal skills to work effectively across all levels, from peers to executives.

  • Mindset: Passion for creating customer-focused and business-relevant product solutions.

What Can Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • PMP (Project Management Professional) certification.

  • Strong background in customer research and/or competitive product analysis.

  • Demonstrated technical and professional expertise in related areas.

  • Knowledge of corporate processes and procedures.
