Program Information

Upward Bound is a federally funded TRIO college-preparatory program created by the Higher Education Act of 1965. Upward Bound students identify as first-generation with families navigating limited access to financial resources.

The mission of The Ohio State University Upward Bound Program is to foster the skills, talents, and motivation students need to graduate from high school and successfully pursue and complete post‑secondary education. The program encourages each participant to fully engage in the Upward Bound experience while continually strengthening their preparation for every stage of their academic journey.

Designed with intention and purpose, Upward Bound empowers students to take an active, informed, and confident role in their education, motivating them to excel beyond their perceived potential. The program focuses on improving academic performance on state‑required exams and the ACT, supporting year‑to‑year retention, and promoting both college enrollment and persistence through degree completion.

The Columbus Upward Bound Program supports students from Columbus City Schools attending Briggs, East, South, and Walnut Ridge High Schools.

There are two regional Upward Bound programs: Ohio State Wooster and Ohio State Mansfield.

During the academic year, the programs serve 126 high school students from Orrville, Wooster, Canton, Madison, Mansfield, and Clear Fork, Ohio.
