About the Lab

The Pagliarini Lab at Washington University in St. Louis is an interdisciplinary research group focused on understanding the biochemical underpinnings of mitochondrial dysfunction in human disease. The lab integrates large-scale methodologies with traditional biochemistry to investigate mitochondrial function, adaptation, and metabolic regulation.

The team consists of scientists with diverse expertise spanning biochemistry, chemical biology, genetics, cell & molecular biology, and bioinformatics, working collaboratively to drive discovery in mitochondrial biology. About the Role

The Research Technician will support both the technical and operational needs of the lab, contributing directly to ongoing research projects while assisting with lab organization and infrastructure. This is a highly hands-on role with a strong emphasis on experimental work across multiple research areas.

The ideal candidate will be able to quickly integrate into ongoing projects and contribute meaningfully to experimental workflows in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.

This position is best suited for candidates seeking a longer-term role in a research environment, with interest in building sustained experience and contributing to projects over an extended period.

What you will Do

Technical Research Responsibilities (80–85%)

Candidates are not expected to have prior experience in all of the areas listed below; these represent the range of techniques used in the lab.

  • Conduct molecular biology and cloning experiments

  • Carry out yeast-based genetic screening assays

  • Work with mammalian cell culture systems

  • Perform in vitro protein purification techniques

  • Oversee mouse colonies and breeding

  • Contribute to multiple ongoing research projects with the ability to quickly become productive

Administrative & Lab Operations Responsibilities (10–15%)

  • Support lab operations, including ordering supplies and maintaining inventory

  • Assist with lab safety coordination and compliance

  • Monitor lab equipment and coordinate maintenance and repairs

  • Interact with vendors and sales representatives

  • Support overall lab organization and infrastructure

What You Bring

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related scientific field required

  • Candidates may be considered at the Research Technician II or III level depending on experience:

    • Research Technician II: Minimum 2+ years of post-graduate research experience

    • Research Technician III: Minimum 4+ years of post-graduate related laboratory experience

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong background in biochemistry, molecular biology, and/or cell biology and organismal genetics.

  • Experience with core techniques such as:

    • Cloning/molecular biology

    • Yeast genetics and screening

    • Mammalian cell culture

    • Protein purification

  • Exposure to CRISPR, western blotting, and mass spectrometry is highly desirable

  • Highly collaborative and comfortable working across multiple projects

  • Strong organizational skills, focus, and attention to detail

  • Demonstrated enthusiasm for scientific research and continuous learning

Compensation Range (Based on Experience)

  • Research Technician II: $41,600 (minimum) – $52,037 (midpoint) – $67,600 (maximum)

  • Research Technician III: $49,300 (minimum) – $61,614 (midpoint) – $80,100 (maximum)

HHMI’s salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. Compensation is determined by a candidate’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, and internal equity considerations. Typically, new hires are compensated between the minimum and midpoint of the range for the role and location.

Physical Requirements

Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet). Work may involve possible exposure to malodorous vapors, low dose radiation, contamination by toxic chemicals and acids and presence of carcinogenic substances or other hazardous materials.
