About this Position
The Underwriting & Risk Analyst plays a key role in advancing underwriting research and development by applying quantitative analysis to evaluate risk and improve decision-making. This role conducts cost/benefit analyses and mortality studies to measure the financial impact of underwriting strategies and product designs. By integrating data-driven insights with innovative methodologies, the analyst helps refine risk selection, enhance pricing accuracy, and support sustainable growth. They will work closely with President, Chief Underwriter and Medical Director of Primerica Life on assessment of new data and tools.
Responsibilities & Qualifications
- Research new and existing external data sources and evaluate their impact on risk segmentation and underwriting performance
- Collaborate with underwriting, claims, actuarial, and R&D teams to explore emerging methodologies, data sources, and innovative opportunities
- Participate in cross-functional groups to integrate analytical findings into underwriting strategy, workflow enhancements, and R&D initiatives
- Share research insights through presentations and discussions with leadership
- Support development and testing of predictive models and underwriting tools including data preparation, variable selection, and model validation
- Conduct mortality, morbidity, and experience studies to assess a/e outcomes and the value of underwriting methodologies
- Perform cost/benefit analyses of underwriting requirement modifications, rule changes, and process improvements
- Conduct validation studies comparing predictive model outputs to historical underwriting outcomes while documenting methodologies, assumptions, and findings
- Translate complex analytical, actuarial, and statistical findings into clear actionable recommendations
- Partner with actuaries to refine assumptions, assess model interpretability, and ensure alignment with pricing and risk expectations
- Identify underwriting practices that correlate with favorable or unfavorable mortality experience and recommend strategic adjustments
- Design and maintain dashboards that track underwriting performance such as placement rates, risk metrics, and predictive model results
- Develop executive-level presentations summarizing research insights, statistical findings, and impact on the business
- Lead analytic projects that align with R&D initiatives across multiple departments within life insurance operations
- Query and analyze data using tools such as SQL, MS Access, Python, Palantir Foundry, and others as required
- Create reports, presentations, and visual dashboards in support of department or business operations
- Regularly present and provide insights to senior leadership
- Expertise in quantitative data analysis methods and data mining
- Excellent diagnostic and problem solving skills to analyze and identify discrepancies within data sets to identify solutions
- Strong strategic thinking skills with the ability to translate trends and analyses into actionable recommendations
- Ability to align projects with company objectives and discuss actionable insights with stakeholders
- Effective communication across diverse audiences
- Ability to handle ambiguity while striving for clarity
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & CERTIFICATIONS
- 3-5+ years of experience in analytics-focused roles required
- Experience in life insurance or actuary preferred
- Progression towards actuarial exams or data science certificates is a plus
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience required
- Master’s Degree in Data Analysis, Data Science, Statistics, or Actuarial Science preferred
- Advanced proficiency in Database Management Software (WinSQL, dBeaver, or equivalent), PowerBI, and MS Office suite required
- Proficiency in Palantir Foundry and programming language (Python, R, or equivalent) preferred
- Experience in the Life Insurance or medical industry is a plus
