At Lumentum Canada, we believe in what we do, and our passion shows. For the 8th consecutive year, we've been recognized as one of the National Capital Region’s Top Employers. Join our enthusiastic, innovative, and driven team to grow and make an impact in the world of optical communication technology.

Job Overview:
We are seeking a Product Engineer to join our Engineering Quality team. You will take on the post-development ownership of complex, cutting-edge optical communications transport subsystem products, including OCS products, WSS, OCM, ROADM elements, optical amplifiers, and super transport blades. This role focuses on delivering exceptional customer value by driving product quality, cost reduction, and production line support for products in the volume manufacturing stage.

You will work closely with cross-functional teams across R&D, manufacturing, supply chain, and quality assurance to ensure top-tier performance of our products.

Why Join Us?

  • Work with state-of-the-art optical communication technologies.
  • Collaborate with a talented and passionate team of professionals.
  • Thrive in an environment that values growth, innovation, and teamwork.
  • Be part of a company recognized for its outstanding workplace culture.

Key Responsibilities:

Own optical products from post-development through manufacturing, ensuring performance, quality, and reliability requirements are met. Support new product introductions by qualifying second-source suppliers, improving line efficiency, and driving manufacturing process improvements.

Provide hands-on engineering support to contract manufacturers, resolving issues related to optical assembly, alignment, testing, and calibration. Analyze manufacturing data to identify yield, scrap, and cycle-time improvement opportunities, and implement corrective actions in collaboration with supply chain, engineering, and manufacturing teams.

Lead engineering change orders (ECOs) to improve manufacturability, reduce cost, and enhance product robustness. Partner with R&D to transition designs into production and support root cause analysis of field and factory issues. Act as the primary technical interface for manufacturing escalations between contract manufacturers and internal engineering teams.

Use data analytics and scripting tools to analyze production and test data, identify failure modes, and drive continuous improvement across optical and electronic subsystems.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in one of the following engineering disciplines (Optical, Electrical, Engineering Physics) or applied physics.
  • 8+ years of experience in a product engineering, manufacturing engineering, or design engineering role in the optical communications / photonics industry.
  • Strong technical understanding of optical communication systems and components, including OCS, WSS, OCM, and Optical Amplifiers.
  • Strong understanding of electronic and optical manufacturing methods.  Hands-on experience with optical alignment, assembly, test, and calibration processes preferred.
  • Ability to work effectively with R&D, quality, supply chain, and manufacturing teams.
  • Experience with optical and electronic failure analysis and root cause investigation.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex optical, electrical, and system-level issues in manufacturing and field environments.
  • Working knowledge of quality and reliability tools such as 8D, 5 Whys, FMEA, and Pareto analysis.
  • Previous experience in a product engineering role supporting contract manufacturers and remote production sites.
  • Proven proficiency with manufacturing data systems and use of scripting or automation tools for data analysis.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Willing to travel to manufacturing facilities in Asia as required (estimate up to 4 times per year).
