Job Description Summary:

Under direct supervision, the Transportation Planning Trainee supports the planning and implementation of plans and programs that address walking, bicycling, and transit use as viable, efficient, and safe transportation option. This position assists with community engagement and encouragement activities, as well as the preparation and graphic design of public information and project materials. The trainee supports research, data, and policy analysis for a variety of planning and engineering efforts and conducts field observations and data collection.

Job Description:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES   

  • Supports the planning and implementation of plans and programs that address walking, bicycling, and transit use as viable, efficient, and safe transportation option. 
  • Supports efforts such as preparing written narrative, presentations, memos, and other collateral.
  • Assists with the development of work products as needed for a variety of transportation plans, programs, and projects.
  • Assists with regular, annual encouragement activities such as Walk and Bike month, Walk and Bike to Work Day, Safe Routes to School events, and the Boulder Walks program. Assists with community engagement and encouragement activities, as well as the preparation and graphic design of public information and project materials.
  • Provides support for community engagement events and activities for various transportation plans, projects, and programs.
  • Attends community events and represents project teams or the Transportation and Mobility Department through tabling and other outreach activities.
  • Supports event planning and logistics for events.
  • Scopes and prepares public information materials and provide graphic design to meet the needs of various transportation plans, programs, and projects.
  • Attends project and public meetings and supports staff team with taking meeting notes, generating comment summaries, and other documentation.
  • Supports research, data, and policy analysis for a variety of planning and engineering efforts and conducts field observations and data collection.
  • Conducts data collection and analysis to evaluate project effectiveness.  
  • Performs GIS data entry and mapping to guide transportation planning efforts
  • Conducts inventories of transit stops, project installations, and other infrastructure.
  • Provides policy briefs and industry best practices research to inform transportation plans, programs, and projects.
  • Other duties as assigned to meet the needs of the organization.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Ability to address complex issues and find information using own initiative.
  • Ability to demonstrate computer skills in areas such as data analysis, spreadsheet software, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Teams, ArcGIS, and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Ability to demonstrate enthusiasm for interacting with members of the public in an empathetic and respectful manner.
  • Ability to demonstrate strong interest or focus in multimodal transportation, transportation planning and transportation policies.
  • Ability to demonstrate strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to think analytically, visually, and spatially.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Knowledge of quantitative methods.
  • Skill in customer service.
  • Skill in written and oral communication.
  • Valid Driver’s License and ability to maintain an acceptable motor vehicle record.
  • Have and maintain acceptable background information, including criminal conviction history.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to demonstrate experience handling sensitive and confidential materials and issues.
  • Ability to demonstrate experience with public-facing job roles including customer service.
  • Knowledge of or experience working with local government or the private sector.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Current or recently (within last six (6) months) enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program relating to Urban or Regional Planning or related field.
  • No experience required

Supervision Received: Transportation Principal Planner, Transportation Principal Project Manager

WORKING CONDITIONS AND REQUIREMENTS   

  • Physical and Mental Effort: Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities that permits the employee to communicate effectively on the telephone and in person.  Sufficient vision or other powers of observation that permits the employee to review, evaluate and prepare a variety of written documents and materials. Sufficient manual dexterity that permits the employee to operate computers and other office equipment.  Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, which permits the employee to work in an office setting.  Work may include extended periods of time viewing a monitor and operating a keyboard.  Ability to work under stress from demanding deadlines, public contact, and changing priorities and conditions. 
  • Work Environment: Works primarily in a clean, comfortable environment.  Works in a setting subject to continuous interruptions and background noises. Occasional night and weekend work required. 
  • Machines and Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computers. City vehicle, bicycles, telephones, calculators and multi-function printers.
