The Opportunity

We are currently recruiting for a Temporary Works Designer to join our integrated joint venture team on the TDA Framework at Sellafield.

The main goal of this framework is to assist in the decommissioning of the Magnox Swarf Storage Silo, one of four legacy waste plants prioritised for clean-up by Sellafield Ltd’s owner, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA).

As  Temporary Works Designer you will be responsible for providing safe, innovative, and cost-effective temporary structures that enable the successful delivery of complex construction and infrastructure projects. This role bridges the gap between design theory and practical site application, requiring close collaboration with site-based teams and permanent works designers.

As a Temporary Works Designer your responsibilities could include:

  • Developing detailed designs and structural calculations for temporary works, including formwork, falsework, scaffolding, propping, and excavation support. Compliance: Ensure all designs strictly adhere to BS 5975:2019,2024 and CDM Regulations 2015

  • Conducting thorough Design Risk Assessments (DRA) to identify and mitigate residual risks during construction, use, and dismantling.

  • Working closely with the Temporary Works Coordinator (TWC) to interpret design briefs and communicate critical design intent to site teams.

  • Performing independent design checks (Cat 1, 2, or 3) on both internal and subcontractor-provided designs.

  • Undertake site visits to assess specific ground conditions or reactive situations that require rapid engineering solutions.

As a Temporary Works Designer you will already have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil or Structural Engineering.

  • Preferably a Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Incorporated Engineer (IEng) with the ICE or IStructE.

  • Proficiency in design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, Tekla, or structural analysis tools like STAAD.Pro

  • Proven experience in temporary works design within the UK construction sector.

  • Possession of a valid CSCS card; completion of a CITB Temporary Works Designer/Coordinator course
