POSITION/ROLE OVERVIEW
The School of Jazz and Contemporary Music at The New School’s College of Performing Arts is seeking highly qualified Overhire Jazz A2 to join its team. Reporting to the Part Time Operations Manager, the Overhire Jazz A2 is responsible for supporting the Audio and Video needs of academic performances and partnership events within the School of Jazz and Contemporary Music.
The Overhire Jazz A2 provides crucial support in the successful execution of concerts, panel discussions, and festivals at the School of Jazz and Contemporary Music. This position is responsible for assisting with setup, operation, and breakdown of audio systems, as well as serving as a key crew member during events. The Overhire Jazz A2 works under the direction of the Overhire Jazz A1 and reports to the Part-Time Operations Manager, School of Jazz and Contemporary Music.
Formed in 2015, the College of Performing Arts draws together the Mannes School of Music, the School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, and the School of Drama. College of Performing Arts students are actors, musicians, performers, writers, improvisers, creative technologists, entrepreneurs, composers, arts managers, and multidisciplinary artists. Our community collaborates with colleagues across The New School in a wide array of disciplines, from the visual arts and fashion design, to the social sciences, public policy, advocacy, and more.
This is an overhire position without regular or guaranteed weekly hours. Opportunities for work will be scheduled on an as-needed basis by the School of Jazz and Contemporary Music department. This position may be renewed pending institutional need and availability of funding.
CORE CAPABILITIES, PRIMARY DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist with the setup, operation, and strike of all audio equipment for performances and events
Support the Overhire Jazz A1 during soundchecks and live events, including managing microphones, monitors, playback, and communication systems
Maintain and troubleshoot wired and wireless microphones, IEM systems, and backline as needed
Follow and execute technical documentation including input lists, stage plots, signal flow diagrams, and run-of-show documents
Provide professional and courteous support to performers, faculty, and production staff
Maintain organization and cleanliness of audio equipment and performance spaces
Mix smaller events independently, including recording sessions, and rehearsals as scheduled
Additional responsibilities as assigned by the Overhire Jazz A1, or the Part-Time Operations Manager
QUALIFICATIONS
At least 1 year of experience working on live events in a support role (A2, Audio Technician, etc.)
Familiarity with live sound systems, microphones, cabling, and digital consoles (Yamaha, Allen & Heath, Midas, Behringer)
Working knowledge of basic audio signal flow and gain structure
Some experience with audio-related software (QLab, Wireless Workbench, Dante Controller, Dante Virtual Soundcard)
Ability to read and follow event documentation including input lists and stage plots
Strong communication, reliability, and collaborative skills
Ability to work calmly and efficiently under pressure during live events
Comfortable working with students, faculty, and a diverse production team
Ability to adhere to university COVID-19 policy and requirements

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience working in music, theater, or academic environments
Familiarity with Dante networks
Comfortable working at heights and using ladders or lifts
FO3 Fireguard Certification
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
Self-motivated and detail-oriented
WORK MODE
This position is primarily in-person and is based on campus to support effective in-person collaboration and engagement.
SALARY RANGE
$28.00/hour
