Enterprise Architect - Application Domain Lead

Position Summary

The Strategic Enterprise Architect, specializing in the Application Domain, is a highly influential and strategic leadership role responsible for defining and enforcing the architectural vision and governance across TMX's global application landscape. This individual must ensure that our software capabilities accelerate business outcomes and align with the enterprise's long-term technology vision. You will be responsible for driving global standardization, managing application risk (technical debt), and maturing the Application Engineering Governance Framework. You will act as the principal architectural authority for the software portfolio, ensuring alignment with TMX's mission-critical systems and strategic business objectives.

Key Responsibilities

1. Global Application Governance & Standardization

  • Establish and Enforce Application Engineering Governance: Lead the development, implementation, and enforcement of a robust application engineering governance framework to ensure the quality, consistency, and lifecycle management of all TMX software applications globally.

  • Define Global Standards: Establish and govern global methodologies, principles, and standards for application design, development, testing, and deployment. Ensure these standards promote the adoption of modern practices like cloud-native architectures, microservices, and event-driven systems.

  • Application Portfolio Rationalization: Conduct strategic analysis of the existing application portfolio to identify, champion, and drive high-impact rationalization efforts (e.g., retirement, consolidation) to reduce complexity and minimize technical debt across the enterprise.

  • Chair Design Reviews: Provide oversight and ensure all technology solutions align with the established EA framework by leading design reviews and approvals in governance forums, such as the Architecture Review Board (ARB).

2. Strategic Alignment & Risk Management

  • Technology Risk Management (Technical Debt): Establish metrics and oversee a governance framework to identify, measure, and actively manage technology risks associated with the application portfolio, viewing technical debt as a key component of the overall technology risk framework.

  • Business Translation and Consensus: Serve as the chief architectural translator between business stakeholders and technology teams, driving consensus on complex design trade-offs and ensuring that application strategy directly supports global capital markets objectives.

  • EA Framework Alignment: Establish and maintain a comprehensive Enterprise Architecture (EA) framework for the application domain, ensuring global consistency and alignment with strategic goals across business, application, infrastructure, security, data, and integration.

3. Leadership and Continuous Improvement

  • Mentor and Coach: Provide strategic direction and architectural mentorship to Application Architects and development teams globally, promoting the adoption of modern engineering practices and adherence to architectural and security guidelines.

  • Agile Collaboration: Collaborate closely with teams responsible for Agile Coaching and Support to ensure architectural governance supports, rather than hinders, a culture of agility and continuous improvement in software delivery.

  • Innovation: Foster a culture of innovation within the architecture community by exploring emerging technologies and their potential application within the TMX environment.

Primary Objectives & Measures of Success

Success in this role will be measured by your ability to contribute to key outcomes, including:

  • Measurable Reduction of Application Technical Debt and associated technology risk.

  • Successful global adoption and compliance with standardized application design patterns and technology stacks.

  • Increased speed and quality of new software delivery through streamlined governance and component reuse.

  • Significant progress in application portfolio rationalization and modernization efforts across TMX subsidiaries.

  • Enhanced conceptual consistency, scalability, and resilience of TMX's mission-critical trading and post-trade systems.

Qualifications & Experience

Required:

  • A bachelor's or master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field.

  • 12+ years of progressive experience in IT, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership or principal architecture role focused on Application Engineering Governance or Application Portfolio Management (APM).

  • Proven experience in a global financial services or similarly regulated industry (preferably capital markets), demonstrating an understanding of high-frequency, mission-critical systems.

  • Deep expertise in at least two of the following domains: Enterprise Architecture, Application Engineering, or Data Governance, demonstrating the multi-disciplinary breadth required to set global standards.

  • In-depth knowledge of modern architectural paradigms, including cloud-native architectures, microservices, and event-driven systems.

  • Proven experience developing and implementing frameworks for managing technology risks, including technical debt.

  • Exceptional strategic thinking and communication skills, with the ability to influence and build consensus at all levels of a global organization.

Preferred:

  • Relevant certifications such as TOGAF, Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), or Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP).

  • Demonstrated experience in leading an Agile transformation or providing strategic direction for the adoption and maturation of Agile methodologies.

Hands-on experience defining API and Integration Governance standards for a global exchange or highly regulated entity.
