The Position

Advances in AI, data, and computational sciences are transforming drug discovery and development. Roche’s Research and Early Development organisations at Genentech (gRED) and Pharma (pRED) have demonstrated how these technologies accelerate R&D, leveraging data and novel computational models to drive impact. Seamless data sharing and access to models across gRED and pRED are essential to maximising these opportunities. The new Computational Sciences Center of Excellence (CoE) is a strategic, unified group whose goal is to harness this transformative power of data and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to assist our scientists in both pRED and gRED to deliver more innovative and transformative medicines for patients worldwide.

Within the CoE organisation, the Data and Digital Catalyst (DDC) organisation drives the modernisation of our computational and data ecosystems and integration of digital technologies across Research and Early Development to enable our stakeholders, power data-driven science and accelerate decision-making.

As the Team Lead for the Automation Core team within the Engineering - Lab Automation capability, you will guide a team of software engineers focused on developing and maintaining reusable, cross-vendor frameworks for integrating with automated systems. These systems will enable robust system control, data extraction, and workflow connectivity for our complex integrated workcells and automated laboratory landscape. This is a unique opportunity to shape our core automation strategy, empower our scientists with reliable and interconnected systems, and accelerate the discovery of transformative medicines for patients worldwide. You will be instrumental in building a team that drives significant impact across our research and early development organizations with a global scope.

The Opportunity

  • Lead, manage, and mentor a team of software engineers, playing a key role in recruiting and developing high-level technical talent and fostering a culture of engineering excellence and innovation.

  • Serve as a key point of contact for Roche Pharma Research and Early Development automation projects, translating high-level scientific goals into clear, actionable technical initiatives and defining the group's scope and priorities.

  • Be accountable for delivering scalable and reliable automation control and data frameworks, connecting integrated workcells to our informatics landscape and enabling downstream scientific analysis and workflow execution.

  • Design, develop, and test robust, scalable, and maintainable cross-vendor software frameworks for controlling integrated workcells and interfacing with diverse laboratory automation systems.

  • Partner with product managers and scientists to understand user needs and translate them into actionable technical specifications.

  • Assess, track, and develop strategy for vendor solutions in the lab automation market to promote standardization across Roche.

  • Play a significant role in strategy development for the lab automation capability, defining the vision for a standardized and scalable framework for lab automation control, data extraction, and workflow integration for Roche’s global Research and Early Development efforts.

  • Foster the growth and development of your team members, creating opportunities for them to expand their knowledge, capabilities, and skill sets.

Who You Are

  • B.S. in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field plus 8+ years of experience in Biotech/Pharma, focused on building and deploying scalable software systems for scientific research, demonstrating a consistent record of outstanding performance and impact through strategic leadership and deep, hands-on technical contributions.

  • Expert technical knowledge of principles related to distributed systems, data engineering, software architecture, cloud-native architectures, and system design.

  • Must possess the ability to both define high-level strategy and execute complex technical work.

  • Deep knowledge of lab workflows, integrated workcells, and the drug discovery domain, and direct experience with integrated workcells and automation control systems (e.g., scheduling software, liquid handlers, robotic arms) is essential.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional development and business goals, with a proven track record of hiring and mentoring high-level technical talent.

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience leading teams, and a solid technical background in cloud-native architectures (ideally AWS).
