ELS is hiring for the position of Tax Associate in Chicago, Illinois.
What you'll do:
As a Tax Associate, you will assist with tax compliance, including the accurate and timely preparation of federal, state and local income tax returns for ELS, a publicly-traded REIT. You will also gather information, research tax laws and correspond with taxing agencies.
Your job will include:
- You prepare federal, state and local tax returns for ELS and its related corporations and partnerships on a timely basis.
- You gather management and accounting information. You obtain any necessary clarification, request additional information and communicate with various departments concerning any problems that arise.
- You conduct research as necessary to determine compliance with the tax laws. Reads periodicals to maintain knowledge about changing tax laws, planning opportunities, filing requirements, etc.
- You prepare the federal and state extension requests and quarterly estimated tax payments for the various companies and helps to maintain the Tax Dept Calendar.
- You prepare federal tax returns and various state returns including franchise tax returns and annual reports.
- You researches, resolves and responds to state and federal regulatory agencies’ notices. You correspond with federal and state taxing agencies in connection with penalty notices and filing inquiries as needed.
- You review corporate and partnership legal documents and correspondence as needed to ensure correct preparation of tax returns.
- You prepare quarterly and annual REIT testing.
- You assist with preparation of quarterly provision calculation for the ELS' public filings.
Experience & skills you need:
- a Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field.
- 0-2 years experience in a tax role. If you have a focus on real estate partnerships and REITs, this is a plus.
- The ability to follow directions to accomplish goals in an effective manner.
- Excellent communication and follow-up skills.
- Intermediate excel skills with the ability to master advanced excel skills quickly.
- Working knowledge of tax software systems is a plus.

Estimated compensation for this position in the states of BC, CA, CO, IL, MA, MD, MN, NJ, NY, VT and WA is:
Annual Salary: $60,000.00 - $65,000.00
The salary listed is an estimate and not guaranteed. A salary offer will vary based on applicant’s education, experience, skills, abilities, geographic location, internal equity and alignment with market data. In addition to the base pay and our benefits, some positions are eligible for bonuses, sales commissions, or incentive pay.
