Rail Pass Type: Internship/Co-op (Full-time/Hybrid)  

Departure and Arrival Date (Start -End): May 2026 – December 2026 or April 2027 (8-12months)

Pay Details: $23-$30 CAD hourly

About This Opportunity 

As a Systems Design Intern, you will perform system operation activities independently / under supervision to deliver a high quality & safe guideway design, on time, at the lowest cost. You will work within a team context to assist in the design of a system that satisfies the overall system requirements. 

Key Accountabilities   

Technical

  • Perform system analysis, modeling & simulation to specify the system performance & verify the train control systems

  • Assist in analyzing train characteristics & safety requirements to define the safe braking model

  • Assist in analyzing guideway to define requirements for headway (passenger waiting time), safe train separation, interlocking requirements, new guideway elements & guideway designs to resolve operational conflicts

  • Assist in delivering the project guideway application data, signal plan, crossover coordinates, track maps & guideway database to software groups. Ensure the guideway design is implemented in accordance with applicable standards & signaling principles.

  • Interface & build working relationships with software & test groups to ensure timely analysis & resolution of in-house & field test issue

  • Development, implementation & maintenance of relevant tools whether procured / internally developed

Safety

  • Promote a safety culture where product safety is paramount

  • Ensure that safety is built into the design by early identification & resolution of safety related defects

Key Requirements

  • The successful candidate should be working towards a bachelor’s or master’s degree from an accredited university or college in Electrical / Computer / Systems Engineering or a related field.

  • Completion of the second or third year of your undergraduate degree, or currently pursuing a master’s degree.

  • Strong planning & organization skills

  • Strong technical writing & interpersonal communication skills

  • Ability to apply & provide feedback on work estimating attributes

  • Exposure to specification-driven hardware & software systems design & associated tools (I.e. Doors)

  • Familiar with mechanical & dynamic motion analysis is an asset

  • Experience with software, modern software development methodology methods, processes & tools

  • Testing & Troubleshooting of Electromechanical & software systems

  • The ability to work 40 hours a week for the duration of the internship is essential. Minimum 2 days a week in the office. 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Co-op student available for an 8 or 12 month term, with at least one additional quarter or semester of coursework remaining after the completion of the internship.

  • Previous co-op/internship experience is a plus.
