The Opportunity

Lead the modernization of the Air Force Financial Services Operations (AFFSO), architecting the migration from legacy systems to secure, cloud-native infrastructure. You'll drive the technical strategy for this mission-critical transformation, working directly with Air Force stakeholders to design compliant, future-ready solutions on AWS GovCloud or Azure Government. This role requires deep technical expertise combined with strategic thinking—you'll need to roll up your sleeves to evaluate architectures, challenge technical decisions, and ensure implementation teams are on the right path, while also developing executive-level roadmaps and presenting to senior leadership

Responsibilities

  • Architect & Validate Cloud Migrations: Design end-to-end strategies for transitioning legacy environments to secure cloud architectures; conduct technical deep-dives to extract requirements, evaluate existing systems, and validate implementation approaches with engineering teams

  • Provide Technical Leadership: Guide cloud engineers and developers with hands-on architectural oversight—review infrastructure-as-code, challenge design decisions, and ensure technical solutions align with security and compliance requirements

  • Develop Strategic Roadmaps: Create multi-phase modernization plans for cloud adoption and DevSecOps transformation; translate technical complexity into executive-ready strategies and investment justifications

  • Ensure Compliance Through Technical Design: Design architectures that meet NIST, FedRAMP, DoD 8140/8570, and RMF standards; develop DoDAF 2.02 or FEAF artifacts with sufficient technical depth to guide implementation

  • Bridge Technical & Executive Stakeholders: Present to leadership while maintaining technical credibility with engineering teams; facilitate technical discovery sessions and strategic planning meetings

  • Define Enterprise Integration: Architect interoperable systems for secure data sharing across DoD and IC environments; establish technical patterns and standards based on deep platform knowledge

  • Guide Technical Implementation: Provide architectural direction across prototyping, application development, cloud engineering, database design, security, and infrastructure operations—ensuring teams follow established patterns and compliance requirements.

  • Deliver Comprehensive Documentation: Produce migration plans, architecture decision records, and technical specifications that implementation teams can execute from

Qualifications

Required:

  • 12+ years IT experience with 5+ years in enterprise/system/cloud architecture within federal or defense environments

  • Direct experience executing cloud migrations (AWS/Azure)—recent enough to understand modern cloud-native architectures, not just legacy lift-and-shift

  • Technical awareness in cloud platforms: infrastructure-as-code (Terraform/CloudFormation), networking (VPCs, security groups, transit gateways), identity management, container orchestration, and CI/CD pipelines

  • Deep expertise in cybersecurity frameworks: DoD 8140/8570, RMF, FedRAMP compliance with ability to architect technical controls

  • Strong experience developing architectural documentation and migration strategies for federal programs

  • Proficiency with architectural modeling tools and frameworks (DoDAF/FEAF)

  • Technical fluency across programming/scripting languages (Python, Java, etc.) and databases—you don't need to develop daily, but must evaluate technical decisions

  • Proven ability to communicate complex technical concepts to both engineering teams and executive audiences

  • Track record interfacing with senior government stakeholders on complex technical initiatives

Desired:

  • Active security clearance or ability to pass NACI background investigation

  • Experience with DoD or Air Force mission systems

  • Hands-on experience with AWS GovCloud or Azure Government specifically

  • Background in DevSecOps practices with understanding of modern security tooling and automation

  • Recent certifications: AWS Solutions Architect Professional, Azure Solutions Architect Expert, or equivalent
