Gender and Sexual Violence Summer Peer Assistant  

Student Employment Opportunity: Human Rights and Equity  

Anticipated start date: May 4th, 2026

Hourly rate: $17.60/hour (15 hours/week) 

Joining the Human Rights and Equity Office 

The Gender and Sexual Violence (GSV) Peer-to-Peer (P2P) team is a part of Brock’s Human Rights and Equity (HRE) Office. HRE supports students, staff, and faculty by addressing human rights, harassment, and discrimination concerns that are connected to the Ontario Human Rights Code and by promoting equity, inclusion and belonging across campus.  

HRE sees great value in the peer-to-peer leadership model and student advocacy regarding human rights, as student leadership creates a more inclusive, safer campus for everyone.  

We are seeking one student staff to join our Gender and Sexual Violence Support and Education team which works to end sexual violence on campus. Our peer to peer (P2P) support team acts as a pivot service connecting individuals to supports both on and off campus and assisting in educating the Brock community on gender and sexual violence. 

Individuals will be offered an 18-week contract of 15hrs/week from May 2026 through September 2026. Successful candidates are expected to be available for in-person program delivery at the St. Catharines campus of Brock University.

The successful candidates will receive fulsome orientation and training including job expectations, understanding GSVSE in the context of Human Rights and Equity, trauma-informed and survivor-centred peer support, as well as necessary information about Brock University. The successful candidate will report to and work daily with the Gender and Sexual Violence Education Coordinator.

Duties & Responsibilities  

  

GSV Education and Event Planning 

Develop, update, and facilitate workshops for students to encourage enhanced capacity and awareness of GSV (minimum 1 per term)  Facilitate ongoing workshops through the GSV Certificate series: GSV, graduate student equity & inclusion series   Facilitate Consent Training to a variety of student groups including students in residence, student clubs, student life programming, and other community groups  Engage in ongoing reading and learning on relevant GSV research  Envision, plan and facilitate student-focused events to enhance GSV awareness, support, and healing (minimum 1 per month)  Create promotional materials, including posters and social media content, to support the outreach and promotion of events and workshops.  Provide in-person or online support for prominent HRE events

Peer to Peer Support 

  • Lead and support daily drop-in sessions by providing peer support from a non-judgmental, survivor-centred, anti-oppressive, intersectional, and trauma-informed perspective 
  • Serve as an initial point of contact for students impacted by gender-based and sexual violence, offering supportive listening, providing information about options, and facilitating warm referrals to HRE Advisors and other appropriate on- and off-campus resources. Student staff will be trained in emotional support skills and in effectively connecting students to professional supports    
  • Support our Peer Safer Walk program 

Outreach and Engagement 

  • Tabling for GSV and HRE across campus throughout the year including greeting students, distributing education and awareness materials, and answering questions 
  • Liaising and collaborating with campus and community partners and underrepresented student groups to create connections, partner on programs and initiatives, and affirm communities. 

Accountability and Reporting 

  • The successful candidate must commit to the following in-person dates for successful hire: 
  • Sunday September 6: All Day (Residence Consent Training) 
  • Monday September 7: All Day (Residence Consent Training) 
  • Accountability for time worked will be implemented through the submission of biweekly time sheets as well as regularly meetings with supervisors to discuss progress and professional growth.

Women empowerment and survivor-centred programming; 2S & LGBTQIA+ inclusion; Indigenous-centered programming; Racialized student programming; International student programming; Anti-ableism and disability justice; Men against violence initiatives 

Qualifications 

Experience 

  • Understanding of gender-based and sexual violence and a commitment to supporting survivors 
  • Commitment to ending sexual violence as demonstrated through previous or current activist or voluntary work is strongly desired 
  • Previous working/volunteering experience in the GSV field is appreciated but not required. Area of academic concentration is not a factor in this hiring.  
  • Preference will be given to individuals with lived experience as members of Indigenous, racialized, 2S & LGBTQIA+, and disabled communities, those who have experienced GSV, those with lived experience of sex work, or other marginalized communities.

Must be a current Brock University student as of September 2026;  Provide a clear Vulnerable Person Police Check upon hiring
