Location: Albany, NY (system-wide responsibilities)

Reporting directly to the President and Chief Executive Officer of Albany Med Health System, the Chief of Staff (CoS) is a senior executive leader who serves as a trusted advisor, enterprise integrator, and execution partner to the CEO across the full AMHS enterprise.

The Chief of Staff plays a pivotal role in advancing AMHS’s mission as the region’s only academic health system—integrating clinical care delivery, physician enterprise operations, academic medicine, research, and education—while supporting the CEO in leading a complex, multi-entity organization with diverse stakeholders and governance structures.

Operating with broad enterprise visibility and influence, the CoS ensures alignment, disciplined execution, and follow-through on the CEO’s strategic priorities. The role has no direct line authority but exercises significant influence across hospitals, the medical college, faculty practice plans, and corporate functions. The Chief of Staff may represent the CEO as a designee and is expected to lead high-impact initiatives central to system transformation, physician alignment, academic integration, and performance improvement.

Key Responsibilities

1. Enterprise Strategy, Integration & Performance Execution
•    Serve as a principal advisor to the CEO on enterprise strategy spanning clinical operations, physician enterprise, academic medicine, research, education, and community impact.
•    Translate AMHS strategic priorities (e.g., One AMHS, physician alignment, quality and safety, academic excellence, financial sustainability, value-based care) into executable, cross-system initiatives.
•    Lead and coordinate major enterprise initiatives that cut across hospitals, ambulatory networks, faculty practice plans, and academic departments.
•    Ensure alignment between the health system and Albany Medical College leadership on shared priorities, decision-making, and execution.
•    Establish and maintain enterprise dashboards and performance management tools to support CEO oversight of quality, access, growth, financial performance, and strategic initiatives.
•    Identify execution risks, organizational friction points, and interdependencies, drive resolution through structured problem-solving and escalation.

2. CEO Office, Governance & Academic Health System Interface
•    Orchestrate CEO priorities, workflows, and leadership rhythms across a complex academic health system environment.
•    Coordinate governance processes for the AMHS Board, committees, and joint academic/clinical forums, ensuring rigor, clarity, and follow-through.
•    Partner with senior executives to ensure board and committee materials are concise, strategic, and aligned with fiduciary and academic responsibilities.
•    Support the CEO in managing relationships with key constituencies, including trustees, academic leadership, physicians, faculty, donors, regulators, and community partners.
•    Serve as the CEO’s representative or designee in internal committees, academic forums, task forces, and external engagements as appropriate.

3. Physician, Faculty & Leadership Alignment
•    Support alignment and collaboration across employed physicians, faculty, clinical leaders, and administrative executives.
•    Reinforce shared leadership norms and operating principles across clinical, academic, and corporate domains.
•    Help manage sensitive, complex issues at the intersection of clinical operations, faculty practice, academic governance, and system strategy.
•    Serve as a trusted connector and neutral integrator across physician, faculty, and executive leadership groups.

4. Change Leadership, Transformation & Culture
•    Lead enterprise change management for major transformation initiatives, including operating model evolution, service line integration, and performance improvement.
•    Drive adoption and sustainability of change through structured communication, stakeholder engagement, and accountability mechanisms.
•    Reinforce AMHS’s mission, values, and cultural commitments through consistent leadership behaviors and engagement.
•    Act as a stabilizing force during periods of organizational change, growth, or external pressure.

•    Integrity & Discretion: High ethical standards and sound judgment in managing confidential and sensitive matters.
