Sustainability Intern
Department: Sustainability Supervisor: Director of Sustainability
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Approved By: Human Resources
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Assist in designing fun, interactive environmental education programming for guests
- Develop engaging educational materials such as activity books, games, signage, and presentations
- Script and storyboard kid-friendly videos or hands-on demos about dune and marine ecosystems
- Create age-appropriate activities that align with sustainability goals and can be led by hotel staff or volunteers
- Lead or assist with eco-themed guest activities, such as eco-scavenger hunts, beach cleanups, or nature walks
- Interact with children and families, encouraging interest in conservation through storytelling and interactive learning
- Collaborate with hotel teams to integrate and launch programming on properties
- Gather guest feedback and suggest improvements for program effectiveness and engagement
- Coordinate with local environmental organizations and community members to align programming with regional conservation efforts
- Seek opportunities to involve local experts or artists in delivering special programming or events
- Track participation numbers and collect data to assess the impact of programming
- Document processes, feedback, and lessons learned for future interns or hotel staff
- Assist in preparing reports or presentations summarizing program outcomes and areas for improvement
- Track progress and organize documentation for green certifications at properties
- Create employee engagement initiatives that align with sustainability goals and green certifications, including green team activities, posters, checklists, and other training materials
- Performs any other duties assigned by management
Qualifications:
- Currently pursuing or would like to pursue studies in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Ecology, Education, Hospitality, Sustainability, Marine Biology, or related fields.
- Self-Motivated and independent: Able to work with minimal supervision, take initiative, and manage time effectively.
- Enthusiastic communicator: Outgoing and passionate about environmental education, especially in engaging young audiences.
- Creative thinker: Demonstrates creativity in developing educational activities and solving challenges in imaginative ways.
- Flexible and adaptable: Comfortable shifting gears in a dynamic hospitality environment and accommodating varying guest needs.
- Team player: Works well with diverse teams including hotel staff, external partners, and families from all backgrounds.
- Detail-Oriented: Attentive to logistics and safety based on variability in settings and participants; prioritizes accuracy in educational content.
- Environmental knowledge: Basic understanding of sustainability principles, especially related to marine and coastal ecosystems.
- Tech-Savvy (Bonus): Familiar with tools like Canva, Google Slides, or simple video-editing apps for creating engaging materials.
