Supervisory Paralegal

US-CA-Los Angeles Full time

Performs specialized legal research and writing in support of work in assigned area of criminal prosecution, including research and analysis of statutes, legislative intent, judicial precedents, agency rules and regulations, and law review articles as they related to assigned cases to include those of an especially complex or unprecedented nature. Persons in this position typically perform the following:

  • Prepare discovery documents by redacting and bates numbering documentary evidence compiled for immigration crime matters primarily related to Title 8 U.S.C. § 1326(a) Re-Entry of Removed Aliens, Title 8 U.S.C. § 8 U.S.C. § 1325 Improper Entry, 8 U.S.C. § 1324 Harboring Illegal Alien for Financial Profit, and 18 U.S.C. § 922(g)(5) Possession of Firearm by Illegal Alien violations.;
  • Create and uploaded tracking spreadsheets for discovery and/or production on immigration enforcement matters associated primarily with Title 8 §1326(a) and (b) subsections;
  • Perform research in various databases to locate and review various documents related to Title 8 USC §1326 violations;
  • Compile subpoena packets;
  • Review and assemble pretrial petition packets to assist in hearings;
  • Prepare evidence binders for attorney review;
  • Draft Fast Track Plea Offer packets using sentencing guidelines;
  • File various motions, stipulations, and notices of appearance.
  • Assists trial staff in coordination with expert witnesses and litigation consultants. 

Qualifications:

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain MRPT facility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship is required for MRPT facility credentials/authorization at this work location
  • Requires paralegal certificate, or JD, or currently attending an ABA-accredited law school, having completed at least one (1) year of study.
  • At least three years of litigation paralegal experience, including trial experience.
  • At least one year of experience in automated litigation support.
  • Must have supervisory experience, including proven capabilities and communication skills to successfully interact with clients and attorneys.
  • Requires sound working knowledge of federal and state court system, legal research procedures, and legal research resources.
  • Requires excellent written and oral communication skills and thorough knowledge of legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw.
  • Must have hands-on familiarity with a variety of computer applications, including word processing, databases (such as document review and file management systems), spreadsheets, and imaging.
  • Familiarity with ESI tools and knowledge of eDiscovery procedures and resources preferred.
  • Ability to consistently deliver highest quality work under extreme pressure will be very important.

  

Hiring hourly rate of pay: $44.54 (Hourly rate set by SCA)  

*This position is regulated by the Department of Labor (DOL) as a Service Contract Act (SCA) contract. The DOL regulates the minimum hourly rate of pay, holiday and vacation leave benefits, and Health and Welfare (H&W) money.  

  

*Employees will earn H&W dollars per eligible hour (including vacation and holiday up to 40 hours/week). H&W monies are used to offset the employer’s cost of benefits the employee elects into and/or utilizes. Any remaining health and welfare monies after all applicable deductions would be cashed out to the employee on a 1 pay period lag.  

       

Service Contract Act (SCA) Compensation & Benefits:

This is an hourly, overtime-eligible position that falls under the Service Contract Act (SCA). In accordance with the Health and Welfare provisions of the SCA, and in addition to your base hourly rate, you may be eligible to receive an additional health and welfare payment for each hour you work to ensure compliance with the minimums set forth by the act. The amount you are entitled to receive will vary depending upon the fringe benefits you select now and in the future.
