Program Overview
The Upward Bound Summer Academic Institute is a six-week intensive program designed to prepare high school students for postsecondary success. Our mission is to provide first-generation and low-income students with the academic skills, social capital, and college-access knowledge necessary to graduate from high school and thrive in higher education.
Key Responsibilities
Academic Support & Instruction: Implement specific strategies to improve student academic performance in core subjects. Provide small-group tutoring and assist faculty with classroom management during the Summer Institute.
College Access Guidance: Assist students with the FAFSA/TASFA application process, scholarship searches, and college admissions applications. Provide insight into the
college placement exam process (TSI, SAT, ACT).
Near-Peer Mentorship: Share personal experiences in overcoming educational and socioeconomic barriers to provide authentic, relatable guidance to participants.
Student Supervision: Maintain a safe environment during academic hours, workshops, cultural field trips, and residential activities.
Documentation & Compliance: Maintain accurate records of student participation, attendance, and progress to ensure alignment with federal grant objectives and outcome metrics.
Minimum Qualifications
Educational Status: Must be a currently enrolled college student or a recent college graduate.
Credit Hours: Must have completed a minimum of 24 college credit hours.
Academic Standing: Cumulative GPA of at least 2.75.
Personal Experience: Demonstrated personal experience in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting the target population (e.g., first-generation status, low-income background).
Preferred Qualifications
Strong working knowledge of the FAFSA and the college admissions cycle.
Previous experience with federal TRIO programs (Upward Bound, Talent Search, etc.).
Familiarity with college placement exam processes and academic interventions.
Strong interpersonal and public speaking skills.
