Northrop Grumman’s Strategic Deterrent Systems (SDS) is currently hiring a Senior Director of Program Excellence to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals on our Division Executive Leadership Team (ELT). This opportunity is located in Roy, UT and reports to the Vice President & General Manager (VPGM).
A good performance foundation focuses on the basics: a good plan, cost & schedule management, change management, supplier management, and risk & opportunity management. As a member of the SDS ELT, the Senior Director of Program Excellence is responsible for shaping and leading efforts to enhance program performance in partnership with P&L leaders to elevate program management skills across the SDS team with demonstrated program execution improvements. The Program Excellence leader will ensure consistent application of effective PM tools and processes, skill set assessments, and focused training to enhance PM fundamentals. The Program Excellence Director will also serve as the chief of staff for the SDS VPGM, orchestrating the division’s business rhythms, communications, and strategic priorities for a workforce of ~5,200 employees across nine locations.
The selected candidate will provide a breadth of leadership as outlined below:
- Transform and drive program execution rigor to enable sustainable profitable growth and consistently execute commitments.
- Mitigate current and near-term programmatic risk while building long-term program excellence capability and culture.
- Develop world class program managers by investing in tools, processes, knowledge, and skill building enabling results driven decision making.
- Operate as independent oversight with implementation authority & process accountability.
- Develop, lead, and execute program manager evaluation and training programs spanning CAMs to senior director levels.
- Lead and manage Division, Sector, and Corporate review processes.
- Produce and integrate data, reports, and presentation materials for a variety of initiatives.
- Define and lead the division’s business rhythms for the VPGM and the SDS Executive Leadership Team (ELT).
- Develop strategic content aligned with enterprise, sector, division and customer objectives, integrating messaging to drive clarity and execution.
- Lead and shape agendas and content for all internal and external division conferences, customer visits, VPGM speaking engagements, and other events in partnership with Communications and Business Development, ensuring the VPGM is fully prepared.
- Support the VPGM in cultivating and maintaining relationships with strategic partners and other key stakeholders.

These positions will have a standard work schedule of 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off
You Will Bring These Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in a relevant field with at least 10 years, or Master’s degree and 8 years of program‑management experience, including 5+ years in a formal leadership role.
- Must have an active U.S. Government DoD Secret security clearance at time of application, current and within scope. Must have the ability to obtain Special Access Program (SAP) approval within a reasonable period of time, as determined by the company to meet its business need.
- Expertise in program execution, earned value management, change management, risk management, and stakeholder management.
- Proven success delivering complex, multi‑phase, multi‑customer programs across the full lifecycle; deep expertise in earned‑value, change, risk, and stakeholder management.
- Extensive experience briefing and influencing executives; exceptional organizational, verbal, written, and presentation abilities.
- Advanced data‑analysis skills with meticulous attention to detail and accuracy.
- Willingness to travel up to 25 % of the time.
These Qualifications Are Nice To Have:
- Experience as a program manager or IPT lead in a development program
- Strong relationship‑building skills, with a demonstrated capacity to engage effectively with senior leaders
- Strategic thinker who can operate both at the high‑level strategic plane and in hands‑on execution as required.
- Ability to thrive in ambiguous, high‑complexity settings and to prioritize competing demands under tight deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to respect confidentiality and safeguard sensitive information.
- Strong execution track record as a PM with profit and loss (P&L) experience
- Experience as a PRA (program review authority) and closely working with FHR leadership (functional homeroom).
- Experience in startup or recovery situations that required review and enhancement of metrics, processes, ops tempo, and decision making tools/products.
- Active U.S. Government DoD Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) security clearance at time of application, current and within scope, with an ability to obtain and maintain Special Access Program (SAP) approval within a reasonable period of time, as determined by the company to meet its business need.
Primary Level Salary Range: $230,000.00 - $345,000.00
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
