Northrop Grumman Space Systems is seeking a Program Deputy Chief Engineer to help lead a well established space program within the space superiority and warfighting business unit. The preferred location for this role is Dulles, VA. May consider one of the following major Space sector locations Gilbert, AZ. This position is 100% on site and does not support remote work

This Deputy Chief Engineer position requires an exceptional degree of ingenuity, creativity, and resourcefulness to lead the system definition, technical planning and execution on an operational program with a well established history during a time of an evolving threat and acquisition landscape. This includes supporting a fleet of vehicles on orbit with executing their required missions, ensuring new mission capabilities (hardware and software based) get on-ramped into the existing system and working with the chief engineer and customer partners to help shape the future of the business area.

Job Responsibilities:

As the Program Deputy Chief Engineer, this individual will be the definitive technical authority for all aspects of engineering on an operational program. Key responsibilities of this position include:

  • Developing and maintaining a strong PMO and customer relationship to ensure that all stakeholder needs, goals and objectives are taken into account.
  • Leading a multi-disciplined engineering team and manages the technical performance of the program including cost and schedule requirements for both internal work and subcontracted elements.
  • Coordinating engineering responses to issues, anomalies or changes in customer direction within the on-orbit fleet
  • Ensuring that the program is adhering to sound engineering and configuration management processes in the development, production, test, and sustainment of products for our customers and is compliance with company policies, procedures, and quality standards.
  • Maintaining cognizance over technical activities within program IPTs and ensures horizontal integration of the best engineering practices across the company.
  • Continually coordinates with the systems engineering and program management team to ensure the execution of program statement of work, consistent technical baselines and serves as the technical point of contact with the customer.

This individual will be the prime spokesperson on company's technical capabilities in support of this mission and is viewed as expert within the field of Systems Engineering with communication to the highest levels (Director/VPs). Given the complexity of the program, the Deputy Chief Engineer needs to be adept at problem solving and providing solutions to problems within a cross-sector program team, ensuring that the typical practices among sectors are smartly integrated to deliver the desired system.

This position is contingent upon the candidate obtaining final clearances and program access(es) within a reasonable period of time determined by the company.

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS in Engineering or related technical field & 12 years’ experience, or Masters Degree & 10 years’ experience, or Ph.D. & 8 years’ experience
  • Requires an active U.S. Government DoD Top Secret/SCI security clearance at the time of application
  • Must be willing travel up to 25% (CONUS)
  • Systems engineering experience, to include: architectural studies, technical baseline definition, requirements & interface management, hardware/software integration, test planning & execution and system sustainment and on orbit operations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required, for both up-and-out communication to executive leadership and the customer, and for down-and-in detailed technical guidance to the program team

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Existing program access
  • Prior experience leading a large, collaborative, multi-disciplinary, cross-site team
  • Prior experience with space systems engineering, including space vehicle and payload design, development, and integration, including development of payload and ground interfaces
  • Technical Leadership experience on space-based systems with space, ground, launch and segments
  • Experience and/or training in Earned Value Management Systems

Primary Level Salary Range: $152,900.00 - $265,600.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
