Carnegie Mellon University is searching for a Staff Development Specialist (Trainer) to join our dynamic Learning & Development team within the Office of Human Resources. Reporting to the Manager of Training, you will support the development, delivery, and evaluation of learning programs. These programs strengthen the skills, proficiencies, and engagement of staff across campus. You’ll collaborate closely with our Senior Director of Learning & Development and HR colleagues to build a learning ecosystem that reflects CMU’s commitment to innovation and excellence.

As an integral member of our L&D team, you will:

  • Facilitate engaging learning experiences across a range of technical, operational, and competency-based topics (e.g., Workday, communication skills, team building, leadership skills).
  • Deliver training through multiple modalities, including in-person sessions, virtual webinars, self-paced/on-demand content, and video-based learning modules.
  • Assist in the development of content, including training outlines, presentations, learner guides, supporting materials, and videos grounded in adult learning principles.
  • Facilitate HR events, including workshops, meetings, and institutes for the campus community.
  • Conduct training needs assessments for individuals, departments, and university divisions.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of training programs, create evaluation surveys, and recommend enhancements based on feedback and learning outcomes.
  • Collaborate across HR and campus partners to understand stakeholder needs and design scalable learning solutions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Contribute to special projects and additional duties, supporting the overall growth and impact of HR’s learning initiatives.

  • Experience with:
    • Instructional design
    • Curriculum development
    • Training facilitation and delivery (virtual and in-person)
    • Learning theory and learning management systems
    • Project coordination
    • Training needs assessments
    • Training evaluations
    • Collaboration and stakeholder engagement

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Experience: 1–3 years of relevant experience in training, instructional design, professional development, or related fields required.
  • Training certifications in DiSC, Eli Civil Treatment, StrengthsFinder, EQi 2.0 a plus.

A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.

Requirements: Successful completion of a pre-employment background check.

Additional Information:

  • This is a full-time (37.5 hours/week ), exempt position based in Pittsburgh, PA.
  • Work Posture: This position operates on a flexible hybrid schedule, typically requiring an on-campus/in-office presence of 3 days per week, with specific days adjusted as needed to accommodate training sessions, events, and program schedules.
  • Sponsorship: Applicants for this position must be currently legally authorized to work for CMU in the United States. CMU will not sponsor or take over the sponsorship of an employment visa for this opportunity.  Carnegie Mellon is not a qualifying employer for the STEM OPT benefit: only the 12-month OPT may be used to work at Carnegie Mellon.
