Sr. Transmission Design Engineer

JOB SUMMARY:

Responsible for the design of manual, automatic, and continuously variable transmission components, sub-systems and systems from concept through to production in order to achieve the product objectives.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Responsible for all design activities related to system/sub-system/component function with emphasis on quality, timing and cost:

a. Prepares system/sub-system/component design schedules

b. Concept design of driveline and transmission systems, sub systems and components

c. Performs or overseas appropriate analysis to determine design suitability (e.g. DFMEA, FEA)

d. Leads/contributes to design reviews with stakeholder groups

e. Liaises with owners of interfacing systems and components

f. Selects appropriate manufacturing methods for components and leads supplier DFM discussions

g. Prepares 3D models and detailed drawings for their designs

h. Supports the validation and development process (DVP&R execution)

i. Supports problem resolution for supplier, manufacturing, test and field problems

3. Coordinates internal or external work to support the design process where required

4. Supports run at rates (RARs) visits at supplier locations when required

6. Coordinate, mentor, and supervise designers and engineers (PT design, CAE and others)

7. Ownership of complex components/sub-systems/systems/programs

8. Handles multiple programs concurrently

9. Guides team members with Subject Matter Expert knowledge in one or more areas (i.e. rotating component design (gears/shafts/clutches/CVTs), lubrication, shift mechanisms, housing design)

10. Involved powertrain/drivetrain system integration into the chassis.

11. Leads and facilitates peer teams for Knowledge Management

SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE

• Required-B.S.M.E. in Mechanical Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, or equivalent

• 5 years minimum related design experience in an O.E. Environment, 3 years minimum with an M.S. degree; title commensurate with competence

• 8+ years of significant component manufacturing and application experience

• Required-experience with a 3-D CAD modeling package, PTC Creo preferred.

• Experience with one or more of the following Transmission Design Categories: Gear Design –Spur/Helical/ Bevel/Spiral Bevel/Hypoid, Shaft design, Bearing sizing, Shift Mechanisms, CVTs, Clutches, Housings, Breathers, Lubrication, Splines and Bolted Joints

• System Engineering and requirements management experience

• GD&T, FMEA, DVP&R and tolerance analysis experience

• Superior technical knowledge as demonstrated by academic and practical experience in

transmission design, either fixed gear or continuously variable transmissions

• Good strategic vision and product knowledge

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• High level of people skills – able to influence in a positive manner

• Able to work and lead in a team environment.

• Continual focus on innovation, quality, and process improvement

The starting pay range for Minnesota is $97,000 to $115,000 per year. Individual salaries and positioning within the range are determined through a wide variety of factors including but not limited to education, experience, knowledge, skills, and geography.  While individual pay could fall anywhere in the range based on these factors, it is not common to start at the high end or top of the range. 

To qualify for this position, former employees must be eligible for rehire, and current employees must be in good standing.
