The Opportunity

This position works out of our Costa Rica – Alajuela location in the  EP Division.  In Abbott’s Electrophysiology (EP) business, we’re advancing the treatment of heart disease through breakthrough medical technologies in atrial fibrillation, allowing people to restore their health and get on with their lives.

As the Sr Occupational Health Professional, you will be responsible for managing the implementation and sustaining of all Occupational Health programs according to local (government) and external (corporate) regulations and standards. Ensure that Occupational Health Management System is established and deployed within Abbott in accordance with recognized international standards; Proposing, developing, monitoring, and improving policies, procedures, and work instructions to ensure that the company meets and complies with all applicable corporate and local Occupational Health Standards and regulations. Assures appropriate corrective action is taken where health and environmental hazards exist. Manage training of employees and contractors. Ensure Management and full compliance of Abbott Occupational health technical and managerial standards.

What You’ll Do

  • Assure compliance of Abbott EP/SH Costa Rica with EHS local government authorities, certification entities and/or corporate officers.
  • Coordinate on-site Occupational Health inspections, supervision and audits. Ensure they are timely and effectively performed and documented.
  • Evaluate and ensure procedures are uptake and compliant with all applicable local and international Occupational Health laws through knowledge of appropriate regulations.
  • Assure compliance with the daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly Occupational Health metric reports to corporate and applicable stakeholders.
  • Manage the Inspection and Compliance verification program of the facility (Check List), in order to identify potential hazards or legal findings, analyzing operating records and reports, documenting all inquiries regarding occupational health or industrial hygiene issues, implementing corrective action where necessary.
  • Ensure that established procedures are followed by ALL contractors. Lead the contractor’s management – Occupational Health performance continuous improvement process.
  • Assure that all applicable Occupational Health compliance documentation (both digital and hard copy) is well maintained and ready to be audited by third party auditors.
  • Work directly with the Occupational Health staff to identify and evaluate potential hazards and risk, offering technical advice and suggestions and recommendations for corrections to be applied.
  • Coordinate with the business leading partner for operations in the implementation and sustaining of ALL Occupational Health programs in order to reduce workplace injuries/illnesses and environmental impacts, ensuring that established procedures are followed by ALL contractors.
  • Assure that ALL relevant Occupational Health Training Programs are developed, delivered, and correctly recorded.
  • Lead the occupational health risk assessment and support the EHS team in developing risk control measures.
  • Supervise Occupational Health staff members in order establish, support, and maintain the Occupational Health programs for Abbott.
  • Reports to local Senior EHS management on the performance and outcomes of the Occupational Health programs for review.
  • Interface with the corporation to achieve necessary occupational health goals and ensure site complies with local legislation.
  • Direct communications about Occupational Health strategies, targets and objectives within Abbott. Assure that ALL relevant Occupational Health Training Programs are developed, delivered and recorded on a timely and effectively manner.
  • Establish full compliance with all Occupational Health permits and licenses required for Abbott site operations. Direct the establishing, maintaining and continuously improvement process of all Occupational Health programs, by determining and leading Occupational health risk assessment, and support the EHS team in developing risk control measures.
  • Responsible of establishing, maintaining and continuously improve all Occupational Health programs.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s/ Licensed Degree in General Medicine, Nursing or Work Medicine.
  • Master´s degree on work related medicine is a plus.
  • Active membership in the relevant Professional Bureau.
  • +10 years of experience in related positions.
  • +5 years, Occupational Health Management Systems, solid knowledge of Occupational Health
  • +5 years, Occupational Health Regulatory Compliance
  • Health Care Units Management Health Care Units Management proven experience.
  • Proven experience managing INS/CCSS certified health care units.
  • Ergonomics training and certifications.
  • Related Medicine, Occupational Health education
  • Advanced command of English language (required).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and good computer skills required. The ability to perform independently, interact well with all levels of employees and make well informed decisions is required
