The expected hiring range for this position is:

$139,800.00-$198,600.00.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such the scope and responsibilities of the position, qualifications of the selected candidate, business considerations, internal equity, and external market pay for comparable jobs.

About the Role: 
Fermilab’s Finance & Procurement Division seeks a Senior Manager Technical Accounting.  The Sr. Manager Technical Accounting position will report to the Controller and will be responsible for the management and oversight of the laboratory's accounting department, including all related transactions, financial reporting, documentation, and records. Implements accounting policies, processes, and procedures in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, Laboratory policies, and Department of Energy and U.S. Government regulations. Oversees the Accounting Department’s personnel, performance and related metrics. Provides extensive support to external and internal auditors, federal customers, and corporate members.

What your day-to-day as a Senior Manager Technical Accounting at Fermilab will look like:

  • Supports the Controller in managing accounting operations, with a primary focus on technical accounting, financial reporting, and regulatory compliance.
  • Prepares and reviews financial statements, DOE reports, and regulatory filings to ensure accuracy, completeness, and adherence to GAAP, Cost Accounting Standards (CAS), and DOE Financial Management Handbook requirements.
  • Provides technical accounting expertise in areas such as revenue recognition, cost allocation, capital assets, and complex transactions, ensuring compliance with applicable federal and laboratory policies.
  • Assists in developing, implementing, and maintaining accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls to strengthen compliance and audit readiness.
  • Coordinates the preparation and submission of external audit schedules and supports DOE/OIG audit requests.
  • Reviews and reconciles complex accounts and sub-ledgers, identifying discrepancies and recommending corrective actions.
  • Supports monthly, quarterly, and year-end close activities, ensuring proper documentation, cutoff, and reporting.
  • Monitors compliance with contractual, regulatory, and DOE requirements, escalating risks or non-compliance issues to the Controller.
  • Assists in drafting management responses to audit findings and participates in the implementation of corrective action plans.
  • Provides guidance and training to accounting staff on technical accounting standards, financial reporting requirements, and compliance procedures.
  • Acts as a liaison with external auditors, DOE representatives, and other oversight bodies on financial reporting and compliance matters.
  • May provide supervision or leadership of a team including hiring, promotions, performance reviews, training, disciplinary actions, team exits, and other duties as assigned. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Abides by and is responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental, health and safety regulations and practices pertinent to this position.

Essential Competencies and Attributes for Success:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 8+ years of experience. Master’s degree or Accounting related Professional Certification such as CPA is preferred.

Applicable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Significant experience using various software such as Oracle and Workday. 
  • Demonstrated ability to build effective teams; create strong morale and spirit; share wins and successes, and effectively lead and influence personnel with diverse skills, work styles and values.

  • Onsite: This is an onsite role, and the candidate must be able to work from our Batavia office.
