Job Description

Role Summary

As the AJC continues its transformation into a modern media company, the Data and Technology team is modernizing its data stack and reporting portfolio. To support this work, we are seeking a Senior Manager, Business Intelligence & Data Products.

The Senior Manager, Business Intelligence & Data Products is responsible for owning the organization’s reporting layer and data products that power decision making across Product, Marketing, Editorial, Finance, and Executive leadership. This role sits at the intersection of data engineering, analytics, and business strategy—translating data into trusted, scalable, and well governed data products.

This is a hands-on leadership role. The Senior Manager manages BI developers and analysts while also setting standards for how BI work is prioritized, developed, and governed across teams. In addition to owning metric definitions, semantic models, and executive-facing dashboards, this role establishes consistent BI methodologies and operating approaches, partners closely with Data Engineering and Analytics leadership, and ensures a single, trusted view of the business at scale.

At The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC), our mission is to be the most essential and engaging source of news for the people of Atlanta, Georgia and the South. As we transition from a historic daily newspaper to a dynamic modern media company, we are seeking a talented Sr Manager, BI & Data Products to join our team. The AJC believes that when you cover the South, you uncover the nation. It’s a belief that’s produced award-winning journalism, elevated our community, and captured the substance and soul of our hometown.

If you're ready to make headlines with your talent and drive, we want you on our team. Apply now and be a part of the next chapter in the AJC’s transformation.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Own BI & Data Product Strategy

  • Define and execute the roadmap for business intelligence and data products, aligned to company goals and leadership priorities

  • Treat dashboards, datasets, and semantic layers as products with clear ownership, documentation, SLAs, and adoption goals

  • Prioritize work based on business impact, while establishing consistent intake and prioritization approaches across BI work

Build Trusted, Scalable Data Products

  • Own metric definitions and ensure consistency across Tableau, Amplitude, and downstream tools

  • Partner with Data Engineering on dimensional models (star schemas), curated marts, and transformation logic

  • Ensure data products are performant, reliable, and easy to understand for non‑technical stakeholders

Lead Reporting & Self-Service Enablement

  • Oversee development of executive dashboards, operational reporting, and standardized reporting views

  • Design tiered reporting experiences (executive, manager, analyst) that reduce one‑off requests

  • Enable self‑service analytics while maintaining governance and data quality

Manage & Develop the BI Team

  • Lead and coach BI developers, analysts, and/or team leads, setting clear expectations and standards

  • Provide leadership to BI managers or senior team leads, ensuring consistent execution, coaching, and performance management across teams.

  • Establish consistent ways of working, quality bars, and review practices across BI efforts

  • Support career growth and skill development while preparing the team to scale

Partner Cross-Functionally

  • Work closely with Product, Marketing, Editorial, Finance, and Research/Insights to understand data needs

  • Translate ambiguous business questions into well‑defined data products

  • Act as a trusted advisor to senior leaders on what metrics matter and why

Governance & Quality

  • Establish best practices for metric definitions, documentation, and change management

  • Implement data quality checks and monitoring in partnership with Data Engineering

  • Reduce metric sprawl and prevent multiple versions of the truth

WHO YOU ARE

Required

  • Must live within a commutable distance to AJC Midtown Atlanta office

  • 8+ years of experience in business intelligence, analytics, or data engineering roles

  • 3+ years managing BI or analytics teams

  • Expertise in SQL and strong experience working with Data Engineering teams

  • Strong experience with BI tools (Tableau required)

  • Proven experience building executive-level dashboards and data products

  • Demonstrated product mindset, including owning a roadmap, prioritizing work based on impact, and managing stakeholder expectations

  • Experience defining requirements, success metrics, and adoption goals for data products

  • Experience partnering closely with Product Management on roadmap planning and prioritization

  • Ability to balance technical depth with business context

  • Ideal candidate will have a blend of strong technical skills and ability to lead a product focused team

Preferred

  • Experience in subscriptions, digital media, SaaS, or consumer digital businesses

  • Familiarity with modern data stacks (Snowflake, dbt, cloud data warehouses)

  • Experience partnering with cross-functional teams on metric frameworks

  • Exposure to product analytics tools (e.g., Amplitude) and semantic layers

  • Experience applying product management concepts (e.g., user needs, MVPs, iteration, lifecycle management) to data products

  • Familiarity with Agile Methodologies such as Scrum or Kanban

How You’ll Be Measured

  • Adoption and trust of BI dashboards and data products

  • Reduction in ad‑hoc and duplicative reporting requests

  • Consistency and clarity of core metrics across the organization

  • Performance, reliability, and documentation of data products

  • Growth and effectiveness of the BI team

  • Proactive alignment of BI roadmap with company strategy and evolving growth priorities

Who Is This Role For

This role is ideal for someone who:

  • Thinks of dashboards and datasets as products, not reports

  • Enjoys building structure, standards, and scalable solutions

  • Can say no to low‑value work and prioritize what matters

  • Is comfortable operating between technical teams and executive leadership
