A role in Planning and Inventory Management (PIM) is critical in enabling the enterprise to plan, position, and move the right inventory at the right time, ensuring a healthy balance between Target’s guest experience and financial goals. As the Senior Director of Planning & Inventory Operations (PIM Ops), you will lead the development of the training, process, and system capabilities that enable the broader PIM organization to execute those responsibilities with excellence. This team plays a foundational and enterprise-critical role by equipping planners, inventory analysts, and key stakeholders with the standards, tools, and system controls needed to deliver consistent, high-quality operational and financial performance. Through leadership in Learning & Development, Process Excellence, and IPP System Process & Controls, you will strengthen the capabilities that drive integration, quality, and scalable execution across the PIM function.

As a Senior Director, you will set up the vision, strategy, and roadmap for these capabilities and mobilize cross-functional partners to drive enterprise adoption, continuous improvement, and measurable impact. You will lead a team of ~30 team members and work across the Global PIM, Operations, Merchandising, and Product/Tech organizations.

About the job:

  • Build and develop a team of leaders and team members who are engaged, curious, collaborative, and solution oriented.
  • Leads the triage and resolve of centralized issues quickly in response to business changes (e.g., receipt reconciliation, tariffs).​
  • Own and evolve the L&D ecosystem for PIM, including Inventory Analyst onboarding, internship programming, and advanced skill development for L5+ team members.
  • Establish a clear L&D capability vision, curriculum strategy, and feedback loops that ensure programming is high-quality, effective, and responsive to business needs.
  • Mobilize educators, SMEs, and operations leaders to deliver consistent, enterprise-aligned training programs.
  • Define process standards and best methods that promote consistency, quality, and operational efficiency across PIM.
  • Provide tools, frameworks, and continuous improvement practices that enable teams to identify pain points, reduce waste, and strengthen integrated workflows.
  • Partner across enterprise (i.e., Stores, Supply Chain, Merchandising) to ensure processes connect seamlessly end-to-end.
  • Lead system governance, triage routines, and enhancements that minimize outliers and create predictable, stable system performance. This includes the advancement of our lead time system accuracy to optimize inventory flow.
  • Partner closely with Product/Tech teams to influence roadmap development and ensure system capabilities evolve with emerging business needs.
  • Maintain a deep-rooted understanding of end-user needs and design capabilities that make work easier, more intuitive, and more effective.

About you:

  • 10+ years of relevant experience Retail operations, including a minimum of 5 years leading a team  
  • Prior experience in Planning or Inventory Management
  • Knowledge of inventory systems or operational processes
  • Advanced understanding of merchandise, financial, and operational principles​
  • Experience in building and/or evolving business and process capabilities
  • Ability to lead through change management, bringing clarity in strategy and comfort in ambiguity. ​
  • Deep analytical, problem-solving, and communication expertise​
  • Strong, inclusive leadership style that empowers high-performing global teams​
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to build strong relationships with you team, leader, and internal partners

This position will operate as a Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement based on Target’s needs. A Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement means the team member’s core role will need to be performed both onsite at the Target HQ MN location the role is assigned to and virtually, depending upon what your role, team and tasks require for that day.
