We’re hiring an Indigenous Relations Specialist to lead the stewardship, implementation, governance and sustainment of long-term agreements with Indigenous communities and governments. As a trusted expert, you’ll also partner closely with senior leaders to ensure commitments are delivered thoughtfully, agreements are implemented effectively, and relationships with Indigenous communities continue to strengthen over time.

Minimum requirements:
Deep expertise in Indigenous governance, First Nation and Métis rights, reconciliation principles, and relationship-based engagement
Post‑secondary education in Indigenous Studies, Business, Political Science, Anthropology, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience
Demonstrated experience in leading through ambiguity on sensitive, complex, and high-risk issues with integrity and respect
Strong strategic judgment with the ability to execute, coordinate, and manage details effectively
Ability to lead complex, multi‑stakeholder initiatives and influence outcomes without formal authority in a large and complex organization
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including executive-level briefing and advisory capability

Responsibilities:
Steward multiple long‑term agreements with Indigenous governments, ensuring commitments align with business priorities, reconciliation goals, and evolving operational needs
Provide expert interpretation of agreement obligations and intent and give clear, practical advice to senior leaders on risks, opportunities, and impacts
Lead and influence multidisciplinary teams across the organization (including Indigenous & Community Relations, Regulatory, Supply Chain, and HR) to embed agreement commitments and Indigenous relations into business planning and execution
Guides the resolution of complex or sensitive Indigenous relations issues, applying sound judgment and navigating appropriate governance channels
Acts as a trusted advisor to senior leaders by preparing strategic briefings and recommendations for engagement with Indigenous leadership and external partners
Monitors the broader Indigenous relations landscape and translates emerging trends into insights and actions that strengthen relationships
Supports Indigenous agreement negotiations and implementation by providing expert guidance and integrating best practices across the organization
Provides informal leadership through coaching and mentoring, while participating in on‑call duties and travelling regularly to Fort McMurray and surrounding communities
Lead and oversee complex, special projects as required
Location and other key details:
This is an office-based role which can be located out of either our Suncor’s Calgary head office (Suncor Energy Centre, 150 – 6th Ave S.W.) or our Fort McMurray Stoney Creek location (Suite 210, 108 Riverstone Ridge)
Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday
Occasional site and community travel as required
