Job Description:

High Performance Computing, AI and Labs is a critical element of HPE. We are focused on delivering innovative solutions that accelerate our customers’ digital transformation, enabling them to tackle their complex, and data-intensive workloads. Combining deep expertise and the development of the world’s most cutting-edge, high-performance supercomputers, is defining the next era of computing delivering valuable insight & innovation. Join us and redefine what’s next for you.

About the Role:

We are seeking a hands-on Specialist Engineer to execute end-to-end performance evaluation of Nonstop Compute and Software solution having x86 processors, memory, networking, and storage subsystem components. You will work with a team of other engineers including experts, will own benchmarking strategy, deep-dive profiling, performance tuning, and capacity characterization on Intel x86 platforms, high-speed interconnects (e.g., InfiniBand/RDMA), and our proprietary operating system and network stack (SSH, NFS, SMB/Samba, DNS, FTP/SFTP, NTP, IPsec). This role is pivotal for customers in payment gateways, banking, stock exchanges, and telecom switching - domains that demand low latency, high throughput, and high availability.

What you'll do:

  • Execute, define and drive the performance activities: metrics, KPIs, SLOs, benchmarks, acceptance criteria, and regression gates for releases.
  • Translate product performance and workload requirements (e.g., OLTP, market data, telecom signalling, replication/backup) into repeatable performance test plans.
  • Design and execute micro-, component-, and system-level benchmarks (SPEC CPU/CPU2017, SPECjbb, TPC-like models, iPerf/netperf, custom harnesses) across bare metal, virtualized (KVM, VMware, QEMU).
  • Help build representative synthetic and production-like workload models (latency percentiles, tail behavior, burstiness, diurnal patterns).
  • Use tools such as measure, processh, xprofile, Wireshark (run-time performance data collection), LoadRunner analysis tools and perform full-stack profiling (CPU, memory, caches, NUMA locality, I/O paths, interrupts, network stack, kernel scheduling).
  • Analyze contention (locks, queues), Interrupt distribution, socket backlogs, TCP/IP/RDMA tuning, storage queues, and filesystem behavior to produce clear root-cause analyses with system software development teams
  • Build automated, reproducible tools / pipelines for benchmark execution, data collection, statistical analysis (confidence intervals, variance), and visualization (Prometheus/Grafana, Python/NumPy/Pandas/Matplotlib).
  • Partner with hardware, firmware, OS, storage, and networking teams to co-own performance outcomes, participate in design and code reviews; advocate for performance-centric architecture and testability.

What you need to bring:

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s in computer science, Electrical / Electronic / IT Engineering, or related field (or equivalent practical experience).
  • Typically, 5–10 years in system performance engineering or low-level systems development for enterprise-grade platforms.

Required Knowledge & Skills

  • Strong fundamentals in computer architecture: CPU pipelines, caches, memory hierarchies, prefetching, branch prediction
  • Good understanding of Linux (and/or proprietary OS) internals: scheduling, memory management, I/O stacks, networking, filesystem/storage layers.
  • Sound understanding of network stack and protocols, socket programming concepts, and network performance tooling (tcpdump, Wireshark, ss, ethtool).
  • Good understanding of RDMA/InfiniBand (verbs, queue pairs, completion queues), SR-IOV, PVRDMA, and low-latency tuning.
  • Performance engineering for NVMe, RAID, HBAs, storage controllers and related tools.
  • Experience with system profilers, tracing, and flame graph techniques; skilled in experimental design and statistical rigor.
  • Working knowledge of C/C++ for systems-level benchmarks compilations and fixes; strong Python and shell scripting for automation, parsing, and visualization.
  • Practical experience with KVM, QEMU, VMware; knowledge of virtio, vhost, SR-IOV.
  • Strong analytical thinking, structured problem solving, and the ability to communicate complex findings to both engineers and non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Skills

  • Familiarity with SPEC, TPC-style, or OpenSource benchmarks like sysbench, ioperf
  • Performance work on HPE ProLiant or similar server platforms

Additional Skills:

Cloud Architectures, Cross Domain Knowledge, Design Thinking, Development Fundamentals, DevOps, Distributed Computing, Microservices Fluency, Full Stack Development, Security-First Mindset, Solutions Design, Testing & Automation, User Experience (UX)
