Employment Type: Full Time – Limited Term - 12 months with potential extension.

Salary Range: T3, Level 5, $102,000 - $120,000 per year. The final compensation for this position will be determined based on individual factors, including education, qualifications, experience, and internal equity.

The Opportunity­­

The Alberta Energy Regulator's (AER's) mandate has expanded to include new areas of resource development, including minerals. This expansion is part of the Alberta government's economic recovery plan to diversify the economy and accelerate growth in new and emerging sectors.

As the Specialist, Geographic Information Systems, you will join the Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) branch’s Geoscience Innovation team, which is a multidisciplinary and multicultural group of geoscientists and geospatial data experts leveraging deep technical expertise, creativity, and a future-focused mindset to reveal and communicate aspects of Alberta’s subsurface critical to the province’s energy future. Public geoscience is central to our mission, and our products aim for maximum utility by the public, industry, and decision-makers. The team is split across Edmonton and Calgary and enjoys a flexible mix of remote and in-person working styles.

You will play a critical role in the evaluation of Alberta’s mineral resources by leading and participating in projects, integrating vast new and legacy data sets, and supporting the competency development of your colleagues through knowledge-sharing activities. You will actively communicate on mineral resource topics internally and externally.

What your day-to-day will look like:

  • Create, edit, review, and publish web maps, feature layers, raster layers, web mapping applications, dashboards, 3D scenes, StoryMaps in both ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Portal environments.

  • Create efficient, readable, and maintainable GIS solutions to support AGS project goals or enterprise-wide initiatives. Requires working knowledge of various programming languages used in GIS and web-based applications.

  • Review and edit metadata for GIS data to ensure spatial information is captured, stored, and displayed correctly for publication to our website.

  • Provide technical support and expertise for web-based ESRI GIS infrastructure, maintain accurate web-based applications, and update associated base layers and geoscience data.

  • Provide on-the-fly GIS support to teams developing fieldwork plans, performing fieldwork, and managing data previously collected in the field.

What we’re looking for in you:

  • Bachelor’s Degree with 5+ years in industry, academia or government GIS work experience.

  • Strong knowledge of current GIS technologies, databases, development languages, and methodologies, with the ability to apply them effectively to new and evolving applications.

  • Advanced proficiency with ESRI products.

  • Demonstrated experience in spatial data analysis and statistical geoprocessing.

  • Excellent time‑management skills with the ability to adapt and reprioritize in a fast‑paced environment.
