Goodwin is seeking a Specialist with experience in intellectual property litigation, with at least three years of relevant experience to join our dynamic team. This role provides high-level support to attorneys across all phases of Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) proceedings, with a strong focus on Inter Partes Review (IPR) matters. Support for additional district and appellate court litigation will be required as needed. This position will sit within the Court Procedures Team. Court Procedures serves as an information resource to the Litigation Department, providing research and guidance on procedural requirements and issues, and is responsible for executing filing of all documents in litigation matters. 

A solid understanding of PTAB processes, filings, and deadlines is essential. However, comprehensive training and mentorship will be provided.
The ideal candidate will have experience with PTAB procedures and general litigation, and the ability to manage a docket involving both PTAB and district court litigation. The role also includes contributions to broader court procedures as time allows.
Flexibility in work hours is necessary to meet filing deadlines and provide timely, accurate submissions. A willingness to work after hours when needed is essential for supporting attorneys and clients effectively. The anticipated schedule for this role is noon to 8:00 PM PT

What You Will Do:

PTAB Proceedings

  • Prepare and file documents for PTAB proceedings, particularly IPRs.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with the USPTO P-TACTS platform and PTAB-specific procedures.
  • Manage PTAB deadlines, coordinating with attorneys and clients for timely filings and service to opposing counsel.
  • Review and maintain complete, organized case files.
  • Track and document filings, milestones, and correspondence in document management systems.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for PTAB-related inquiries and case updates.
  • Communicate effectively, including contacting the PTAB at the direction of supervising attorneys.
  • Manage and assemble exhibits and evidence for filings and hearings.
  • Ensure all documents comply with PTAB formatting, citation, and content requirements.
  • File through P-TACTS and ensure proper service on necessary parties.

Client and Practice Support

  • Tailor support based on partner and client preferences, following specific procedures.
  • Assist with special projects such as large file transfers and assignments or power of attorney documentation.

Quality Control & Workflow Management

  • Apply quality control practices including spellcheck and checklists for error-free work.
  • Independently prioritize tasks and maintain an organized workflow.
  • Serve as the point of contact for docketing matters; training on procedures and software will be provided.
  • Maintain electronic files according to firm standards.
  • Engage professionally and discreetly with clients and team members.

Court Procedures Workflow

  • Provide support and conduct research relating to procedural issues that arise during the life of a case.
  • Advise case teams on the proper procedural mechanisms to accomplish stated objectives.
  • Build an expertise in IP related procedures, requirements, and filings in various trial and appellate jurisdictions.
  • Proactively assist with IP matters and extend assistance to non-IP related litigation matters as time allows.

Who You Are:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Paralegal certificate helpful.
  • Minimum 3 years of recent patent PTAB/IP legal experience in a law firm setting.
  • Strong multitasking and prioritization skills; able to manage multiple demands efficiently.
  • Positive, service-oriented attitude toward clients, attorneys, and coworkers.
  • Self-starter committed to success and professional development.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Proactive problem-solving ability with a focus on solutions and results.
  • Ability to perform under pressure and work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Willing to fill a normal schedule of 12:00 pm PT to 8:00 pm PT, and able to work significant overtime, including evenings and weekends, as needed.
