The Opportunity

We are seeking a Corporate Tax Solicitor or Senior Associate to join our Band 1 corporate team in Sydney.

This is an exciting opportunity to join our Sydney Tax practice where you will be working with Partners James Pettigrew and Jay Prasad, as well as Tax Partners and Associates across our national Tax practice.

James is a recognised senior tax expert with 32 years of experience in the Australian tax advisory profession.  James has particular expertise in advising on large scale M&A transactions, with emphasis on advisory engagements in the property, funds management, banking and finance and infrastructure sectors, together with advice to private equity investors.

Jay is a transaction tax specialist experienced in advising corporates, financial institutions, private equity, and other managed funds on a wide range of tax-related matters. His expertise spans corporate mergers and acquisitions, restructures, IPOs, capital management programs and financing transactions.

You will undertake a range of corporate tax work that supports national and international clients on complex commercial transactions.

What you’ll do

  • Advising clients on tax implications of transactions and investments across our corporate, funds, energy and resources and property clients and HSF Kramer groups.

  • Negotiating with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) when required.

  • You may be advising clients on a range of corporate tax law from corporate reorganisations, trusts, initial public offerings, secondary offerings, spin-offs, joint ventures, employee share schemes and executive remuneration, through to partnerships.

  • While your focus will be on corporate-related work, you will form part of a broad tax offering spanning the Corporate, Finance and Disputes practice groups, and will work closely with your tax colleagues in Australia and internationally.

  • The role will not encompass tax compliance work.

What you’ll bring

  • 4+ years' experience across a range of corporate tax matters (international tax, M&A or corporate tax) in a leading private practice firm, top-tier accounting firm or large corporate.

  • An unrestricted Australian or New Zealand practicing certificate.

  • An excellent academic record, ideally including a Masters in Taxation (or having commenced a Masters in Taxation).

  • An ability to deliver work to a high standard whilst working to tight timeframes, working closely with colleagues and maintaining a strong attention to detail.

  • A team focused approach and an enjoyment for supervising and mentoring junior solicitors.

  • A commitment to client service and a desire to build strong relationships to support the growth of the practice.

  • An innovative mindset, curious about AI and emerging technologies.
