Software Engineer - Kernel Fundamental Technologies (Waterford Office or Brno Office)

Red Hat’s Kernel Fundamental Technologies (KFT) Team is looking for a Software Engineer to join our team. In this role, your work will support the direction of technology at the core of Linux kernel and Red Hat Enterprise Linux. You will be part of a team focused on kernel development and testing to include both kernel and user space packages. Most of the work is centered around Linux Kernel development, implementation, and defect work upstream and downstream. As a Software Engineer, you will also work collaboratively across engineering, quality, integration, documentation, and product teams in support of Red Hat Enterprise Linux releases. 

What you will do

  • Extend and improve the existing Input-Output Memory Management Unit (IOMMU)  code base
  • Work with colleagues to determine IOMMU implementation in RHEL releases
  • Perform design, implementation, and review of Linux kernel code
  • Participate in the broader upstream Linux community
  • Backport fixes to Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) releases
  • Communicate and help coordinate dates, deliverables, feature requirements, roadmaps, etc.

What you will bring

  • Proficiency in the C programming language
  • Experience developing software using C on Linux 
  • Understanding of how to build the Linux kernel and familiarity with developing kernel code
  • Knowledge of Linux scripting tools like Bash and Python
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work in a distributed team environment
  • Problem-solving and collaboration skills
  • Experience with open source tools and development models like make, shell scripts, git, etc.

The following skills are a plus:

  • Familiarity with AI tooling to assist with design and implementation of Linux code
  • Experience with upstream development, including Git and Linux kernel patch posting procedures
  • Experience with backporting upstream code to Linux distributions, kernel configuration, building, and testing
